Drakes Lemon Pies

I loved these (and am drooling as I am typing this)--haven't seen them in NJ in quite a while--anyone know where I might get them?

In my market (Massachusetts), the only Drake, fried, "pies" that I see are cherry. I've had one since the McKee take over, although not recently, and they are still good. Table Talk still makes the true pies in the mini size, and some of the millions that they make are lemon. IMO, it is that sugar glaze that makes those Drake pies so good.

lleechef's meringue is amazing. I never cared much for meringue till I tasted hers. Come to think of it, I still don't care much for meringue -- if it isn't hers.

Today I saw that JJs (JTM Foods) makes lemon, in addition to the blackberry and cherry that I usually see. The JJ product is over twice the size of Drake, and is sold one per package. I didn't buy one, so I can't report, but I think that they have wide distribution. They are available on the internet too. Drake ("by Hostess".........I thought that McKee now owned them) is also on the internet, but no lemon.

I at one point thought JJ's pies might have been a rebranded Little Debbie (McKee) product, because of some of the flavors (including lemon at one point, and chocolate pudding), and that they at the time were the only other pies to come in boxes.
But now, while Little Debbie has adopted the Drake's half (square) size, and now, the same three flavors (apple, cherry, chocolate pudding), JJ's still make the big bigger one, and the other flavors. But now, they also have a mini (half sized) one that comes in those same three flavors as Drakes and Little Debbie.

Also, If you're seeing "Drakes by Hostess", that must be on Amazon, and the sellers simply haven't updated the product descriptions. Even the pictures now are updated and have the "By Hostess" removed.

I saw  "New, best ever" Hostess fruit pies at a c store today. I bought one, against my better judgement, just so I could post about it here. "One bite and in the trash",,,,,,,,,,,,but ahhhhh.......not so much. Actually it was very good, and much to my sorrow (I'm supposed to be on a diet), I ate the whole thing. Often "cherry" pies are mostly red goo with one or two cherries. The Hostess pie was STUFFED with real cherries. The critic in me wonders for how long..........

I saw some of those NEW Hostess pies today at the supermarket and remembering your post about the cherry pie I decided to try an apple pie (it was all they had). The crust was better than it used to be, but there was not a single actual piece of apple inside.

Me too! Lemon was my favorite, but pineapple came next. Heck, you had the company there in Bridgeport. Many's the time I'd go to Charley Marchitto's grocery in Hamden for a sub, a nickel Frisbee pie and a Pepsi -- all for a total of 35 cents.

I bought another cherry pie. They had apple too, but I had posted about the cherry......
My second try was more like Michael's . I got just one cherry, and a few cherry bits that added up to maybe another cherry. They got me sucked in, but I will not be fooled again...............

I still have not seen a Drake's lemon pie recently, although I see cherry on a regular basis.

What I really miss here in Ohio are Drake's Devil Dogs. I used to buy several boxes of them whenever I was back in Connecticut, and my daughter used to send some to me when she lived in Old Lyme. I know I could order them, but ... .

You might want to check your local Walmart Super Center. I vaguely recall seeing Drakes cakes at my local store a few weeks ago.

I used to see the JJ pies at Market Basket 4 for a $1.00 but not lately. The now sell their own brand of small pies
( made by Table Talk ) along with Table talks own brand.  They do have lemon and its good! I love their "Boston Cream type pies with the chocolate swirl on top.   Also Walmart has some good small pies to 50 cents and the lemon is the best..

WalMart now sells Drake's Devil Dogs dipped in chocolate. It's terrible that they taste so good. Little Debbie has been good for the brand.
