Emerald Isle, North Carolina, and to Richmond, Virginia. Especially sea food in/around NC

Wife and I plus son and his wife are spending a week in August on Emerald Isle, NC.  Looking for some special (but not especially high $$) eats.  Also any recommendations between Richmond, VA and Emerald Isle - something special like the green chile cheeseburgers at the Owl Bar & Grill in San Antonio, NM.

What is your itinerary?  Are you driving from Richmond to Emerald Isle and back on I 95 through Goldsboro.  What is your planned route.  That would help suggesting road food for you.  Thanks.

I've only been to Emerald Isle twice.  Once for a quick stay and then one extended 2 week vacation.  I actually thought the restaurant scene was much better in nearby Beaufort.  I think it was like a 20-30 minute trip depending on traffic.  The real cost effective gem there was the Beaufort Grocery Co.  They had great sandwiches and soup for lunch.  Everything was fresh.

We went to a couple other places in Beaufort and I'm sure I could hunt around and find them but I know they were pretty pricey.  Let me know if you are interested and I'll see if I can remember them.

Our itinerary is not set - it could be determined by recommendations on where to get some special eats.  Goldsboro is on two of our three suggested routes via Google Maps.  We are not fond of I-95, or most interstates for that matter, unless we are in a hurry.

The only other time we were in Emerald Isle, probably 15 years ago, we had a unique experience at the restaurant next to the Sanitary Fish Market.  We thought being next to and presumably associated with a fish market that it would be good.  Afterwards we renamed the restaurant The Sanitary Landfill.  Needless to say our experience was not good.  We'll probably venture out of Emerald Isle, but not to The Sanitary Landfill.  The Beaufort Grocery Co. sounds real interesting.  We're not looking for pricey spots and will be cooking in most of the time - but when we're out and about we'll be looking for places to eat.

Thanks!

I am not to familiar with the Emerald Isle end of the island but try the Ruddy Duck Tavern in Morehead City, right next to the Sanitary Restaurant.

Also the Shark Shack and the Watermark retaurant in Atlantic Beach are also very good.

My favorite restaurant in Beaufort is the Spouter Inn.

We ate one family dinner at Jordan's House of Seafood in Emerald Isle,NC during our visit to Camp LeJuene in April.  It was a busy evening for the place, but we got seated fairly quickly. Lots of deep-fried stuff on the menu at reasonable prices. Our party of Six included two pre-teens, and everyone seemed to come away satisfied. Hush-Puppies stood out as very good.

Front St Grill was one of the other places we went in Beaufort.  The food was great, the service was just awful.  We actually thought our waitress got fired in the middle of our meal but the manager came and said she spilled something on herself and went to change.  Nobody covered for her while she was gone and we got no reduction on the bill.

If you decide to explore the area go S to Topsaild Beach.  Here's a link to restaurants in the area.  It's 40 miles from Emerald Isle to Topsail.

Booked a rental house in Emerald Isle (one block to Ocean, 2 blocks to Sound). It's not until August, but I'm already day dreaming about our trip. Glad I searched Roadfood! Thanks Littleman.

How updated is that list? Any new places since 2010?

Also, I like the tip to visit Beaufort. Although this is our "beach trip," it's our first visit to the Crystal Coast (we normally do OBX - Corolla, Ocean Sands, Duck) so we will explore the area a little So, I'd love some 1/2 day trip recommendations - especially if weather doesn't cooperate!

Thanks RoadFood Family!

While I don't have anywhere near the experience of Littleman, I would highly recommend Grady's BBQ at 3096 Arrington Bridge Rd, in Dudley, NC. I've never been to McCalls's, and I've been to Wilber's once, and while I thought it was good, I just absolutely adore Grady's. They are open Wed-Sat, something like 10-3. I've been there 9 or 10 times since the first time in 2012. Make sure you also get some of their amazing fried chicken.

I've only been to Emerald Isle once, back in the 90's, but I agree with hatteras04 that Beaufort is a better option for dining in the area.

Yes, Beaufort looks close. And the house has a kitchen, so, we'll only eat out a couple times. The Grocery Co. looks like a sure bet to grab stuff for the house.
