Fat Boy's Pizza - Davenport, IA (fine example of Quad-Cities style!)

The last time I had Fat Boy's was the early '90s, when my dad brought some home.  Said he used to have it all the time growing up.  What I mainly remembered was a ton of cheese, and sausage that was even more finely-ground than Harris'.

I'm in town this week for the holidays, and I'd already done Harris and Happy Joe's on recent visits.  I wasn't sure if Fat Boy's was even still around; they apparently don't advertise, and they don't have a website. Happily, they were, and I got a 12" sausage, because really, what other topping do you get on Quad-Cities pizza?

Absolutely first-rate.  A malty, crispy yet flexible crust, plentiful sausage, and even more plentiful cheese.

Look at that sausage!  And the cheese is excellent on its own - if I didn't know how good the sausage was, I would have been satisfied with just a cheese pizza.

Locals already know what's up, but if you're from the area and visiting, or merely passing through, I implore you to consider Fat Boy's.

That looks delicious, but better swallow a few Zantac first!

And, I like the 'tavern-style' cut, something I learned here on RF:  a Mid-Western tradition of cutting round pies into square pieces.  I now employ this cut on my Sam's Select thin-crust Hawaiian - the best frozen pie I've ever had.

Actually, it's not a tavern cut - QC-style pizza is strip-cut all the way to a line in the center.  There are no crustless pieces, even in a large pie; the strips are simply made longer.

I mean, maybe if you did some kind of special sheet-pizza order from a bigger establishment like Harris or Frank's (if they even do sheets), they'd be forced to go across the strips, but I've never seen that.

Also, I forgot to post the menu! Curious about what the "Hell" and "Purgatory" pies are.

    Probably the recommended pre-consumption Zantac rating:  3Z = purgatory ; 4Z = Hell.

Well I'm not just lactose-intolerant, I'm lactose-bigoted, so I did pop a couple of CVS brand "dairy relief" tablets afterward.  They work almost frighteningly well.

Oh, I should also mention that Fat Boy's is, not surprisingly, cash-only!  But there's an ATM in the rather seedy bar next door.

I'm Intrigued by the sauerkraut topping. Hell and purgatory might have something to do with that.

Perhaps "Hell" and "Purgatory" refer to the spiciness level?

That's a nice-looking pizza but The QC is usually out of the way for me unless I have a pretty reason for passing through, so...how's the fried chicken at Riefe's?

That really looks good!  Thanks so much for the report back Ketteract.  The only Quad Cities style pizza place I've been to is Frank's in Silvis, IL and I would love to try some of the others, like Fat Boys.

Cliff, or Al, could you please try to call me?  I'm afraid I may have just left my phone in a taxi.  Thanks,

I did leave it in the cab.  I was able to track it down.  That was too stressful.  I think I'll go to San Diego, lie on the beach, and have some fish tacos and beer.

Sauerkraut seems to be a traditional topping in the QC.  Frank's, Harris, and Fat Boy's all offer it - even Happy Joe's, which isn't "QC-style" (but is its own unique pizza).  I can't say I ever had it growing up, though.  I'm inclined to agree with ScreamingChicken, it probably has to do with heat.

Ketteract, is Fat Boys strictly carryout?  The menu says Sunday pickup starts at 11am but I don't see any mention of seating, and I'd like to be prepared if I go through the QC and have to eat in or on the car.  Thanks!

I'm 99% sure it's carryout-only.  Even if there were seating, trust me, you wouldn't want to dine in!

    Be sure to get sausage!

Nope, not yet.  America's Athletic Classic is still 5 weeks off and Fat Boys is penciled in for Sunday lunch on the drive home, so we'll see how things turn out.

I think saurkraut pizza was invented by Happy Joe Whitty and usually paired with Canadian Bacon as a topping. Not really my favorite. An acquired taste to be sure.

Going to try Fat Boys pizza in late August.  The Yelp page lists credit cards accepted but has no hours.

I'll see if I can get the info on Hell and Purgatory pizzas, guessing ghost peppers on Hell and maybe jalepenos on Purgatory.

I believe they may be cash-only despite what Yelp says.  I paid with cash during my last visit there.
