Favorite Hot cereal??

Deja Vu..all over again.
I was back in 1951..and mom was serving me a hot breakfast.... my favorite. Real Farina...
Saw it on the shelf yesterday, and so I bought it,thinking of my childhood. And unlike many things, this WAS exactly as I remembered it. I've done this a few times and the experience is always the same.Comforting delicious!
So used to a quick cold cereal. Does anyone else enjoy real hot cereal? This was the actual FARINA brand. No instant packet. Hell, it cooks in a little over 2 minutes. Maybe next I'll try Maypo, or Wheatina, Maltex. You can still find them next to oatmeal(my least favorite).

The ONLY cereal my mother made when we were kids was Maltomeal.  I HATED it because there were bumps and lumps in it.

My mother never made oatmeal because the thought of it made her sick.

In my twenties I had oatmeal for the first time at a friend's house for dinner.  I LOVED it!  I make it for dinner quite often and order it for breakfast at a few restaurants that serve McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal.

Then in 2004 I spent a week in the hospital.  My throat was raw and I had trouble swallowing from the surgeries.  They served me Heaven in a Bowl....  Cream of Wheat.  I LOVE IT!  I also make it for dinner but can't make it often because what they consider a serving for one seems to be a 1/6th of what I think is a single serving.

Think I want to try Farina now.  I find hot cereals very soothing.

Just read about Farina.  Sounds like Cream of Wheat.  Now I'll have to look for it.

I liked Farina and Cream of Wheat, especially with raisins, brown sugar, and butter. My brother's favorite was Maypo which I thought was disgusting. I haven't eaten any cereal, hot or cold, since I was a kid...which is quite a while ago!

I wanted my mother to buy Maypo.  Those TV commercials were so inviting when I was a kid.  It never happened..  Just Lumpy Malt-O-Meal.  Yuck!

In retrospect, I probably thought Maypo was disgusting because my brother liked it, not for any real reason since I'd never tasted it...

A bowl of oatmeal is OK, but I'll trade that for a side of grits for my fried eggs, any day of the week.

Lee, cornmeal mush (or the mush in Li'l Rascals, most likely) isn't grits. It's polenta. That's made from straight up cornmeal and grits are made from hominy. Mush in a bowl is just runnier. Usually mush is the consistency of thick polenta and cut into slices and fried. It's pretty yummy, but I don't count it as a cereal.

-- Kenyon's Grist Mill stone ground white corn meal.  Yes, this is the stuff that they use to make Jo(h)nny Cakes.  It can be eaten as a hot cereal before they are pan fried into Johnny Cakes, as I have eaten many times growing up in RI.

-- Grits (non-instant).  I haven't found much difference between brands, as long as they are non-instant.

-- McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal.

--Farina.  I ate it more as a kid, but as with leethebard, I fully enjoy it each time I "try it again".

-- Malt-O-Meal (original).  I had never had this until I was in my 20s.  I was introduced to it by Janet, who grew up eating it in the Midwest.

Chocolate Malt-O-Meal. About once every ten years I see it in a store and buy it. I maybe have it twice then throw out the box after a few years.

Interesting. In our Italian home, my mom made polenta often. Sometimes the slice method you mention.Often it was just pretty thick, served with tomato sauce. Loved it!

My mom likes Ralston (well, actually a mix of Ralston and Maypo) but Ralston is hard to find locally.  I'm not much of a hot cereal eater myself, but I do occasionally like Grape-Nuts with milk and applesauce warmed in the microwave.

Well, with a 1970's working mother, I learned quick how to make my own instant Cream of wheat packets into an edible breakfast before heading out the door with my housekey around my neck...  Instant cream of wheat, made with water (no milk, oh gosh no way)... then added about 5 tablespoons of white sugar on top after it would harden and I'd eat it with a knife and spoon.. sugar layer, then wheat... I still do this.. grosses people out totally.

Didn't Ralston merge with Purina, and that's why Purina has that red and white checkerboard in their own logo?
