Finalized So-Cal Roadfood (yes it's all Roadfood) itinerary

Sandra and I will be heading to LA, San Diego and Catalina Island in Mid March

Roadfood wise we plan to do everything deemed regional, ie Fish Tacos, Cobb Salad, Ceasar Salad, Smoothies, Chinese Chicken Salad, French Dips, Street Tacos, Ramen, Korean Tacos, Americanized Sushi etc. Usually Sandra will just follow my suggestions, however I know she doesn't like Hot Dogs, Italian Sausage, Ethiopian or anything spicy.

The recent thread about LA Burgers got me thinking. We both love burgers and we  have some of the best burgers in the country where we live . Everyone knows my opinion about burgers in LA. I don't have any burgers on the itinerary however am I doing a disservice by depriving Sandra of an "LA Burger opportunity"? or should I just chalk it up to a potential wasted meal and concentrate on all of those other regional specialties?

Take her to Apple Pan, tell her Clark Gable used to be a regular, enjoy the atmosphere and the best banana cream pie west of the Rockies!

I think at least one stop for a recognized L.A. burger would at least give her a chance to see how they compare to the ones with which she's familiar.  If there's a good burger place near one of your planned stops you could just split one...

Sandra will never turn down good pie and I know that banana cream pie was a winner too-  the Apple Pan was in my opinion the best burger of my last trip back in 2009 (can you believe it was that long ago??!)

What's your opinion of Irv's Burgers?

We have a lot of stops in LA to make in a short period of time- We are planning on a lot of shared meal stops. Our Roadfood itinerary in San Diego will be much more manageable. Sandra is very open minded and honest so she will certainly provide her opinion if I ask.

Listen to bb.  Go have one burger!  I think that could qualify as "regionally appropriate".

I'll second (3rd, 4th?) the approval of Apple Pan for burgers.  I actually like the one without hickory sauce better.   I'd get one of each, and each of you have a half of each, and see what you think.  Janet and I really enjoyed the L.A. area for burgers.  My parents lived out there in the early 60s, and my older brother was born there.  They talk about how the whole area was pretty much a culture of cars and drive-in burger stands, etc., and they miss that part of it.  Going back many decades, burgers are by all means quite "regionally appropriate" for the L. A area.  You can freely enjoy them with the full knowledge and confidence that you are staying "regionally appropriate".   ;)

Easier said than done! I think we're going to stick to sharing just one burger, and we'll stick to sharing mode with the exception of the salads. We have at least 12 stops in my itinerary in three days- And  I suspect I may be on my own when it comes to the street tacos . Perhaps if some of our Southern California Roadfood friends cares to join us (Ed Sails? Mar? etc ) then it might be easier to explore more variety

There's always these stands. I'd love to give Bill and Hiroko's a shot or Marty's Hamburger Stand.

We'll have to stick to one burger joint and split a burger. There are so manyother  wonderful things out there such as Korean Tacos, Smoothies, Chinese Chicken Salad, etc that simply doesn't exist where we live.

I hear ya. I'd love to eat off of Roy Choi's Kogi Taco truck, he started the whole Korean taco thing and, by all accounts they're sublime! I don't envy you having to pare down a list of places to go out there.

If you're only going to be there for three days I'd say skip the burger.  Thought you would be there longer.  Enjoy California food!  I always did every year we went there from Alaska in the winter!!!!

We'll only be in LA for 3 days. We'll be in San Diego for 4 days and then a day trip to Catalina Island. I already warned Sandra that the LA portion of the trip  will be very "ChiTownDinerish" in a  buffetbusterian kind of way.

In-N-Out is always my first stop off the plane and always Animal Style.  It is totally Regionally Appropriate...so go!

I'm sure you'll do Hodad's once or twice so that covers San Diego burgers.  I will be envious!

BTW - without a calculator, 12 stops in 3 days is 4 per day.  That's pretty meager considering "we'll stick to sharing mode " and "planning on a lot of shared meal stops".  Over the course of an 18-hour day, that's a stop - or half a stop since it is shared - every 4.5 hours.

I have 14, no 15 potential places to stop in LA-  We plan to spend 8 hours sleeping and and another 8 hours sitting in traffic.  Besides I'm with Sandra, not you. We know how you behave when you're with Patti.

Hodad's is on the list but for the chocolate shake and we will only go once, so is the OB Sub and Smoothie Shop across the street.

I have 12 stops in San Diego- but that's over 4 days and involves normal eating

I have no idea where will go on Catalina Island.

While Hodad's is very good, if you only time and stomach space for one burger place, it would have to be the Apple Pan.  Then again, it depends om what type of burgers you like. I like classic thinner burgers, so I like Apple Pan.  Hodad's a are a little bit thicker.

As far as In-N-Out, don't even consider wasting time there.  I have was out in L.A. for a few weeks in both 20111 and 2013.  I had to see what the big deal was about, so I tried it 3 times at 3 different loctions, just to make sure it wasn't a bad fluke.  All 3 were a glorified McDonald's, except McDonald's has much much better fries. Yes, In-N-Out has plentiful and fresh veggies on top, which is great.  But the rest was not very good at all.    Likely in the top 5 worst fires I've ever had, and again, I tried them at all 3.  The burger patty itself was slightly better than McD's. ... And, for perspective, though I generally like to avoid chains, I'm not fervently anti-chain.  I do enjoy an occasional Five Guys or Shake Shack.   No thanks to In-N-Out.
