Fish fry @ Stalzy's Deli (Madison WI)

Not quite 3 years ago I posted about Stalzy's Deli in Madison and while we've been there a few times since, last month we went for the first time on a Friday.

My apologies for the reflection...the board is apparently glossier than I thought!

The fish listed under the walleye is fried perch in a Hamm's beer batter.  Yes, Hamm's.

My wife and I make a good team, as she'll eat most of the vegetables on the relish plate (we are not Radish People) and I'll eat the bread.  And that bread was very good (especially the rye), and she really liked the coleslaw.

I can't remember if the salad was party of the relish plate or her dinner, but either way she liked it as well.

The breaded and fried walleye was extremely good.  One filet did have a few small bones but the meat was moist, tender, flaky, and not at all fishy.  The German potato salad on the side was served warm instead of piping hot, and had a nice flavor of vinegar and bacon.

The perch.  And in all honesty, the reason we're here because I'd learned about it from Stalzy's Facebook page.

This was some of the best fried fish I can recall ever eating.  Top notch.  The batter was crisp and the fish was tender, everything was nicely seasoned, and it wasn't at all greasy.

The potato pancake was no slouch, either.  Slightly wet in the middle, it wasn't hard or mushy and the onion level was just right, although I did add a little bit of salt.

One final note.  Normally I'm not a fan of tartar sauce because too often it's overly sweet and contains too much pickle, but Stalzy's sauce is really, really good.  Like bordering-on-being-addictive good.  I'm not sure if the base is straight mayo or maybe a mayo-sour cream blend and I know there's pickle and some sort of acid in there, but whatever the recipe is it works big time.

Beautiful. When it comes right down to it I'd rather eat yellow perch than its cousin, the walleye. The trouble is, you can fillet a couple of walleyes to make a meal while you have to clean a dozen or more perch to do the same. And as they're so very close in good eating I'll almost always opt for the 'eyes. Now if I'm eating out I go perch.

As a rule of thumb, I prefer perch in Wisconsin over Walleye, except in Northern Wisconsin where I would be going for the Whitefish, Now if I were in Minnesota it would be another story.
SC, have you ever been to Wegner's St Martin in the Milwaukee area?

No, not yet.  A few local RFers made an impromptu Friday visit a couple of weeks ago but I was unable to attend.

I miss the cabin my Grandparents used to own up there, we would load up on fish.  You could fill a 5 gallon bucket full of blue gill and perch in 2 hours, the walleye and pike, ahhh the memories!

SC - thanks for the memories

For the record, and without naming names, we were split in our appreciation of Wegner's.  Those of us that had been there before and previously loved the place continued to do so.  Those who were new to Wegner's were less than enthusiastic.  In spite of the split decision, we all had a wonderful night and enjoyed each others company.

Highlights of the evening included behind the back discussion of ScreamingChicken and his "problem" (wink-wink).

Consider me one of those that loved Wegner's when I visited with Ann Peeples 3 months ago. Wegner's will find itself somewhere on a top 10 list for 2015.

SC - Great tartar sauce & potato pancakes are hard to come by. Great find.

Flatlanders, coasties, & everyone else: Wegner's is definitely to best place for YOU to go for a Friday Fish-fry in Wisconsin. No need for YOU to go anyplace else.

Now hold on just one minute Pie Diva. If these FIBs and Eastern Elites find out that dinner also includes fried chicken and is AYCE, they might overrun the place.

Everyone, just forget that crazy talk from Pie Diva.

Oh, I can assure you the last place you'll find a hipster is at a Wisconsin fish fry. They'll make observatory comments about all the old folks and their oxygen tanks and how the overwhelming odor of pee permeates the place.

I think you are getting it mixed up with the hotel we stayed at in Vevay, IN.
