Can we add a stop in Stoughton to the tour?

Sure, you can pick up the ChickenMan while you're there.

As we ponder an earlier start, please keep in mind Mrs. Roadhouse and I will be at Irish Fest until midnight; checking into and getting settled at our hotel in Racine by 1:30am; finally getting to sleep around 2am.  So let's not make it too much earlier, please.

CSD,
We'll definitely be at Irish Fest Saturday afternoon.  We've pre-purchased our tickets, so barring a catastrophe we'll see you there.

Then we should stick to 2 or 2:30 to avoid the lunch rush.  I'll probably make 1 or 2 pre-lunch stops...

We are good with leaving the time as is. We're at breakfast now and have an appointment with a Genius at the Apple Store at 11:15 in Deer Park.

2pm at Fred's.  Table for 11, whoever gets there first.  We'll regale you with tales of our overnight stay at the worst motel ever.

See you then!

Well, since you're currently the closest you should probably be there first...

Meanwhile, I'm getting phone calls like, "I turned on the A/C in my car and smoke started coming out..."

After hearing the story of Buddy's Excellent Motel Adventure today I don't think Joe had anything to do with it, as he certainly would've negotiated a price lower than $10!

The rest of us are hoping to get the Reader's Digest abridged version of the Motel Adventure.

Wiped out after a long weekend.  All you need to know right now is, we had great Burgers, some fine apps, excellent; ice cold Sprecher's Root Beer, and some terrific company.  Oh yeah, the "Screaming Chicken" vanilla flavored liqueur didn't suck.  Not going out to buy a bottle, but no one dropped dead from it either.

An after lunch stop at Adrian's Frozen Custard didn't disappoint.

ScreamingVanillaFlavoredLiqueur took lots of pictures which I expect he'll post once they're developed.   Yup, he shoots real film!

More on the Hotel from Hell after a night's rest.

The roll will be shipped out tomorrow!

I briefly thought about stopping for pizza on the way back but since it would've made me late for feeding the dog, I opted to head straight home.  I didn't eat again until almost 10 and even then it was just a little cheese and a few Triscuits.  Fred's burgers do the job!

After gobbling a bunch of appetizers, I couldn't even begin to finish my burger-so that made a good late night snack. Freds burgers are even good reheated!!

RE: Fred's in Burlington, WI 2015/09/02 18:08:19 (permalink)
I went to Fred's via some back roads, one of which led me to Johnstown Center and the Johnstown Food Center.  In past years when  drove by I thought it was closed, but today it was clearly open so I stopped to check it out.  The fellow under the popup was grilling free samples for the passersby...not that there are all that many in Johnstown.

I bought a package of very good homemade hot dogs, and a package of sirloin steaks.

From there I continued on to Elkhorn and Annie's Burgertown, as I was feeling weak and need to keep my strength up.  Can you guess what Annie's probably used to be?

There's one booth, a couple of stools, and quite a few license plates inside.  Clearly, the emphasis here is on car service and carryouts.

In the back is (I presume) the co-owner, grilling burgers on a grate that's heated by an electric element.

This was a solid, cut-above-fast-food burger that came with a nice side of small-town drive-in ambience and a cup of tasty homemade root beer.  I'm guessing Annie's does a good business on Fridays and Saturdays with the high school football game and date night crowds.

Everyone knows what Fred's looks like so let's get straight to the food.  I started with a communal basket of extra-crispy (by request) onion rings.

Followed by 1/4-lb versions of one of the specials (I can't remember the name but it had bacon and barbecue sauce) and a Cajun burger.

I'm not sure what these next two are or who they belonged to, so if you see your lunch please speak up.

Mrs. Roadhouse ordered the other special of the day, which came with pico de gallo and avocado.

And I believe this is Buddy's 1/2-lb garlic burger.  While I didn't have one this time I've had it in the past, and it's right up there with the Cajun burger as a favorite.

After lunch it was time for a trip up the street to Adrian's Frozen Custard, a long-time Burlington tradition.

This group is available for weddings, bar mitzvahs, or just to annoy your neighbors.

Abe_froeman and Mr. Maki shared this...thing.  Just looking at it makes my teeth hurt.

I'm not sure if this is frozen custard or sherbet, but either way it contained real raspberries.

And that's Fred's for another year.  Weird...I just remembered that my uncle Fred moved to Burlington last year!

We're just over a month away from The Contingent's annual barnstorming of Fred's so I thought I'd reignite this thread for all interested parties.

Saturday, August 20th is the big day.  As usual, our visit to Fred's is tied into our Irish Fest weekend.  The talent lineup looks fairly ordinary this year, so we could be looking for other diversions in SE Wisconsin.  Anyone interested in making a day of it is welcome to chime in with ideas.

I'm not sure at this point.  I leave for Ohio on the 22nd and will probably be getting ready that weekend, although I hope to have everything ready to go before then.  It'll likely be a last-minute decision.

Speaking of Burlington, B. J. Wentker's is featured in Bottoms Up: A Toast to Wisconsin's Historic Bars & Breweries if anyone's ever interested in some history.  I've not been there.
