Plus, if we're talking about hitting John's and Fred's and Adrian's for Frozen Custard, I'll be bypassing the flapjacks that morning.

Moderation is the key, which is why I'll be taking only 1 bite of each burger you order.  The lip fungus is mostly cleared up...

Some unexpected car maintenance costs have put the kibosh on getting a hotel this time around.  So we won't be stopping in Franklin for Hatch Chiles.  Also, if we could keep the 2pm meeting time, that would be helpful.

I think we'll only be visiting Irish Fest on Friday this year.  Not sure what Saturday will look like after we finish up in Burlington.

Supposed to be a rainy Saturday. Boo.
Buddy, we can pick up peppers on the way to Burlington, or we can make it an after Fred's thing-to-do....let me know, so I can reserve the peppers. They want a pickup time. I'm getting fresh and roasted, but I sure don't need a pound of each. I'm sharing with Gyp, but we can always get more and share more.

X1 - Please buy us 1 pound each of roasted & fresh. We'll also buy whatever portion of your chiles that you don't think you'll need.

I ordered peppers, both fresh and roasted. Gyp and I will bring them with us. I told them I'd take 4-5 pounds of each.
On the one hand, if everyone wants peppers, we can get 5 lbs of each, and get the price break.
On the other hand, if nobody except Jim wants peppers, 10 total pounds is way too much, and I'll just get a couple pounds of each.
Let me know by 11 tomorrow morning.

We might take some, but not a lot.  if nothing else, I'll pick up the tab for a pound or two for use at Fred's for those who want to make their own GCCB.

Sorry to hear about the vehicular troubles.  Would you like to buy my 2007 Pontiac G5?

2pm will be fine.  Mrs. C is staying home so I'll probably have time for some lunch before lunch.

The Weather Channel's current forecast is calling for a high of 76 with a 90% chance of rain tomorrow.  Fortunately CTD isn't going to be there, as nobody likes that wet dog smell.

Uh-oh...now I'm starting to seriously reconsider going to Fred's this afternoon:

Not sure if I'll make it to Fred's today-- I'm hosting a function at work tomorrow, so have to cook a few things today. But if I finish cooking by 1 pm or so, I'll jump in the car and head toward Horseradish Burger Headquarters in Burlington. Otherwise, I hope to see y'all at the Taqueria gathering.

Ok, I just came back from Sendiks. I bought 3 pounds hot, roasted (medium [and raw] is the only other option). The size is much smaller than I expected. My 3 # fit in a plastic quart container and I guess I was expecting much more shrinkage. I must say there is nothing like the smell of fire roasted Hatch Peppers in the morning; sorry Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore. Have fun today folks at Fred's.

X1( Christan) gyp( chuck) and I ate at both Johns and Freds. X1 and I split a cheeseburger at each place for comparison sake. Johns was fine-nothing special. Gyp got a patty melt and enjoyed it.We also split and order of clam strips-Howard Johnson would have been proud. Freds hit the ball out of the park-perfectly medium rare, and with the addition of the freshly roasted chiles brought along it was fabulous. We all shared a bunch of appetizers-fried pickles, homemade potato chips, cheese curds, deep fried green beans, and mushrooms. We then went over to Adrians for frozen custard and Pie Divas peach slab pie. I ordered Georgia peach custard and was wholly disappointed. It tasted well, like nothing. Absolutely no peach flavor whatsoever. After last years wonderful raspberry custard, it was a big let down. The peach slab pie, however, was excellent. It was a fun day as usual with the contingent. Looking forward to the next crawl! Hoping others pipe in and add pics and commentary...oh-I forgot the deep fried saganaki sticks at Johns...those were good! As Christin is our resident Greek, she deemed them worthy.

John's Main Event burgers are a good, solid pub burger. No complaints, but they pale in comparison to Fred's.
John's did have a special appetizer of "Greek Saganaki Fried Cheese Sticks". They were very good...much better than the clam strips.
Fred's appetizers were all excellent, as usual.
I, too, am not wild about Adrian's custard. How the hell is frozen custard warm??? How is this possible? I don't understand.
Great fun day, though, despite the rain.
Thanks for the slab cake, Bobbi. That was my dinner!

Ann - Thanks for all those apps. Great to have you back with The Contingent.

X1 & Gyp - We really appreciated the Hatch Chiles, they made our burgers at Fred's all the better. Best GCCB I ever had, it beat those things in NM everyone raves about.

RE: Fred's in Burlington, WI 2016/09/02 20:42:09 (permalink)
A brief overview:

The slightly tangy saganaki sticks from John's Main Event, which is just a couple of storefronts from Fred's.  Gyp, X1, and Ann Peeples got there first and got an early start on things.

While the focus at Fred's is on the burgers it's almost impossible to not order a few appetizers.

Not only were the roasted Hatch chiles a 1-day special, they were actually a 1-table special!

Because I'd made the mistake(?) of eating lunch ahead of time I wasn't all that hungry, but my horseradish burger was still quite tasty.  And because I ordered it medium-rare it was nicely pink in the middle.

Here's what threw the monkey wrench into my burger plans: Casual Joe's in Whitewater.  The building's an old auto body shop that's been repurposed.

Joe's serves meat that's been smoked the same day it's ordered.

The owner and an associate took a 17-day barbecue-themed road trip while Joe's was in the planning stages, and it's shown on the map on the wall.

I knew I would be eating burgers so I knew I should just get something light...but I ordered the 3-meat sampler anyway as I have no willpower.  The meats were pulled pork, brisket, and a unique jalapeno-cheese sausage, and I ordered mac & cheese and cornbread as my sides.  The pork is dressed Carolina-style with a little vinegar and it added a nice flavor, but I would've liked a little more smoke.  The brisket was a nice mix of fat and lean and had a good beefy, lightly smoky taste, and the sausage had a definite kick from the chiles.  The mac & cheese had broken a little bit but was still very enjoyable, and the cornbread was a crumbly cake style.

The sauces are homemade and while I didn't use any on my barbecue I did give them a try.  The sweet is what you'd expect from a red barbecue sauce around here, the spicy had a unique flavor due to sriracha being an ingredient, and the stout (my favorite) had an earthier, less sweet flavor.

RE: Fred's in Burlington, WI 2016/09/02 23:42:56 (permalink)
Mrs. MFL and I met some friends at Fred's Wednesday for lunch. I took no pictures but I mentioned to the bartender that I was in a dilemma. I had narrowed down my choices for my 2 burgers to 3. She asked what I had in mind and maybe she could help. I said I wanted to try a Fred's cheeseburger for sure as I never, in all my visits, had tried one and I didn't recall anyone else ever having tried it. The other burger choice was either the garlic burger or the horseradish burger. I had tried both in the past and so I was stuck. With a big smile she said, "Oh you don't have a problem just do what I do and combine them. That's what I always order." Mmm, that is now going to be one of my choices. It was really good. The flavors didn't clash at all. Oh and the Fred's burger? Nope, the combination of sweet green sautéed peppers, Swiss Cheese and ham just didn't work with the ham being lost in the mix of flavors. On another note, Lawd but those roasted Hatch peppers rock!
