Friendly closes more stores

The Massachusetts based Friendly chain has struggled in recent years. I had the pleasure of knowing Pres Blake, one of the founding brothers when I was a student at Springfield College, where he was a trustee. He had recently sold out and was an energetic, out going gentleman. I later knew a man who spent a career as a store manager, because he refused a promotion.

Corporate owners have managed to company into a bad situation. It has been sold and reorganized many times. Pres Blake even looked at buying it back.

I hear that stores are picked to close when the lease runs out, or the building needs a major face lift. Some of the stores are franchised. Those, I understand, do better than the corporate stores.

We went today, for a trip down memory lane. The food was good, and the store was over 1/2 empty during the Friday lunch "rush"

Never ate at any of their stores, but we would frequently buy their ice cream from grocery stores when visiting points east.  Good stuff, reasonably priced.  Too bad about the downward plunge in business.

I don't think there are any in the Syracuse area now.
I cant post a link. Try syracuse dot com.

I had a hamburger in Oneida NY a few years ago. It was good and the place was packed...
In Syracuse the James St store was kind of an overflow place for a Roadfood joint,
    Mothers Cupboard.
It did business, or so I thought. A dollar coming in, and dollar and one cent going out?
Out of business in the long run.

Many years ago, the potatoes with breakfast were like quarter scale tater tots...

They are still opening new stores though.  New one in Marlborough, MA at the recently developed Apex Center on Rte 20.

I have only been to that one for breakfast, decent food and service.
