1. Grilled over a grill, with grill marks
2. Boiled on the stove or in 'dog water'
3. Frozen in the bun, wrapped in waxed paper, then nuked for 90 sec. (Latchkey kid holdover)

Toppings
1. Brown or yellow mustard, raw onion, sauerkraut if there is any. My mother cooks hers in butter and brown sugar.
2. Chili, cheese & raw onion
3. Chicago style, baby!!!

I've mentioned it before, a number of times, but there IS a way to microwave a hot dog (or, better, a thicker sausage, like bratwurst, knockwurst, etc.) and have it come out descent: WRAP IT. Paper towel is good; I use waxed paper (because I freeze them wrapped in waxed paper already). It holds the fat to the meat, giving a some browning on the outside. Comes out sort of like in between frying and steaming.

1. Cast Iron Skillet medium low, bacon fat or lard and don't break the skin if possible.
2. Flat top
3. Deep Fried

Detroit Coney Sauce, Yellow Plochmans Mustard, Finely Diced White Onion. In that order.
Bun Steamed in Fresh-O-Matic

When in College
Electric cord with wire exposed and attached to two forks. Shove forks into Hot Dog ends and plug it in until hot. You will know when its done. Make sure you unplug before you remove forks. Best done when not drunk.

Grilled usually for me..then split, grilled on the inside..flipped loaded up w cheese..
Sometimes but ..not always with any:
Onions/relish/hot sauce/ and mustard..but never "ketchup".

" Nobody, I mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog."

Only 2 kinds of people put ketchup on a hot dog. Mental patients, and Texans.

Name that movie.

What is on this dog in the photo?..intriguing indeed.

It was kinda funny, when I 1st read how it posted I didn't see the 'nnever' , so it looked like 'microwave!! Respect the dog'.

And for the above question , I'm not sure of the movie quoted. It was hard enough for me to remember the exact quote from Clint Eastwood about the ketchup.

Bad News Bears.  Remake was decent, stayed true to the spirit of the original.

WarToad for the win.

I forget exactly how my mother figured out about hot dogs frozen in the bun wrapped in waxed paper being zapped in the mic for 90 seconds, but don't knock it til you try it. Is it the best hot dog I've ever had? No. But in a pinch for a quick lunch it worked.

Has everyone seen this?

Been doing it (and posting it here) for years. I use mainly Johnsonville and Hillshire Farm sausages. When I buy a package, I remove them, wrap each one in waxed paper, and freeze them. In a 1600 watt microwave, frozen, the individuals are done in 50-60 seconds.

When I first went vegetarian, I really missed hot dogs around 4th of July. But the veggie dogs you can get around town are actually pretty decent (I live in LA so there are a lot of options - went veggie in Florida where there weren't many options). Strangely enough, I got really put off pigs-in-a-blanket in elementary school because they served them what seems like daily. Also, at my school they were called "Weenie Winks" which just sounds so wrong.

My first vege-dog was back in the late 1980's and it all the fine qualities of a piece of garden hose.  Last summer at the bidding of a teenage neighbor girl I ventured back to where Angels fear to tread and tried one again.  I was pleasantly surprised.  You would not mistake it for a true skin-on butcher's dog, but as a healthy alternative at least the texture and basic flavor was there.  Took about 30 years of food factory tweaking, but not bad.

My boss called them Wiener Winks.

Although I loved them grilled with hot mustard and sauerkraut from the front window grill (a NYC thing) at a Kosher deli, I really miss the Sabrett dirty water hot dog carts I grew up with. I Loved them with mustard and onion sauce washed down with a chocolate Yoo-Hoo.

I wanted too add one more requisite. My hot dog must be made with a natural casing.

I used to love chili dogs too although they were rare in my house. I'm not sure if it was just a pain for mom to make them or if my family weren't really into it. With 3 kids, my parents had to make the grocery money go pretty far but my mom could do wonders with a basic chili recipe. I think she'd melt a single slice of American cheese on the chili dogs. Today, it seems simple but as a kid it was really something!

Ah, the ketchup vs. mustard issue!  A very dear friend and I had a long-term and good-natured battle over that topic. Neither of us conceded victory to the other we just enjoyed the fruits of a truce, both of us continuing to use our preferred condiments.  But of course, as everyone knows, mustard IS what civilized men and women put on their hot dogs.

No natural casings in my market, but some decent smoked franks that do well when griddled with bacon fat, served on a slightly toasted bun (top or side, dealer's choice) and complemented with kraut and chopped onion.

Oh...and mustard, of course.

Veggie dogs have come a long way. I would griddle them for best flavor.

Can anybody here put into words what the difference in flavor/texture, etc. is with hot dogs "steamed in beer" and hot dogs "steamed in water"?

Bart

There is no difference! Why? Because a hot dog is an encased meat and the only way to change the flavor of an encased meat is to add that flavor to the dog while it's in the emulsion state, before stuffing the emulsion in a casing(skinless or natural). Once cooked/smoked at the factory, the flavor is in the dog.

Sometimes I find that simmering in water leaches out some of the salt and fat. Perhaps kosher style dogs are overseasoned, since their usual fate is in dirty water style? Grilling or microwaving them intensifies the salt beyond my threshold, and creates an unbalanced flavor. So does long steeping or simmering. There is a sweet spot.

Hatfield and some related brands of Texas-style andouille dogs are pretty good, too.

To simmer a hot dog in 165 degree water for 8 minutes will not leach out anything. However, if one steams a hot dog, the leaching factor is negated.
