Please forgive my assumptions about the ten gallon hats.  Everything I know about Dallas I learned from Walker Texas Ranger!

I thought the same thing the first time I came down here. After all, J.R. Ewing wore a cowboy hat to the office every day on "Dallas".

When I first went to France in 1978 they thought that all Americans wore ten gallon hats and went to work on horses, just like "Dallas".  It was the only American TV show they had ever seen.

I also thought the same about Texas.  My brother decorated his condo in things Western.  I was so depressed the first time I went to Texas.  Nothing western in the stores.  So...  being bright I thought... The thrift stores!

WRONG.  Same junk as in ours.

The only western stuff I found came from China.

There were seven of us for our meeting at Luscher's. Lots of sharing and food photos. We did get several group photos taken, which I will post upon arrival home. Thanks to everyone for coming out!

SD - Pleasure to meet you and thanks for the cupcakes!

It was fun to get together with some of the local roadfooders and our visitors from the north!

Re: Headed to Dallas 2016/01/24 08:57:16 (permalink)
What a fun and tasty 'meat-up' we had yesterday at Luscher's in the Deep Ellum neighborhood in Dallas.  Special thanks to Amy (stricken_detective) for bringing dessert and plates/utensils for sharing our meaty and sweet bounty!  And thanks as well to Dallas-based Southwest Airlines for making fares so cheap in and out of our 'small airport', Love Field.

Michael (Twinwillow), our true Dallas cognoscent, suggested this wonderful meeting place.  When we all met I noted that nobody was wearing a hat, yet we were standing nearly in the shadow of the water tower of the Adam Hat Factory.  Michael told us that it had been converted to lofts years ago.  Every time I meet Michael I learn great stuff about a city I've called home for only ten years.  And now I learn that my favorite BBQ joint, Slow Bone, also makes truly fantastic fried chicken!

I'm shocked that the photos came out at all, because we were sitting in a "Texas-sized" booth with little ambient light.  (I don't even own a cell phone, so I am truly amazed that Amy's phone took those photos without a flash.  My ancient Nikon SLR with a 1.4 lens could not have done that!).

So, thanks to Amy's phone and a gracious Luscher's employee, let me caption the "Cast of True Characters":

Clockwise:  Cliff (BB), Jim (MetroplexJim), Amy (stricken_detective), Boyd (schlotz), Jane (Mrs. plb), Phil (plb), and Michael (Twinwillow).

Edit:  "just for llechef" ----  I forgot to mention the result of my 'hidden agenda' of doing a "hat survey".  I saw only ball caps and a red feathered motorcycle helmet in Deep Ellum.  But, due to a wreck on the Central I had to take the back way out of the Canyon.  My goody goodness ... endless blocks of gentrified former industrial for the Yups, Gen X-ers, and Millennials ... ; in traversing that I did see one "Western hat" on a Boomer gent escorting a very comely X-er.  Somehow, I manage the same, sans hat.

What a well-spent, wonderful afternoon.  My dear God; how I do love life!

Edit:  A 'senior moment' for me; I had earlier identified Phil (plb) as "Pete".

Jim, I loved reading your well written prose of yesterday's fun afternoon lunch with the bunch.

Amy, It was great meeting you and thanks again for the delicious sweet treats.

Boyd, Jane, and Pete, I sure hope to be seeing y'all again when we (hopefully) do this again.

I truly enjoyed my day with y'all!

And of course, thanks to Cliff (buffetbuster) and, South West Airlines for making it all possible.

While the food looks great, the best part is that Aimee wasn't wearing one of her revoltingly hideous (or hideously revolting, if you prefer) Cubs jerseys!!

It's nice to see that 1 official Contingent member and 1 honorary member were there to class up the joint.

I have to agree! It was fun to get together with everyone and try out a new place (for me anyway). Dallas (and suburbs) have such a variety of unique restaurants and interesting neighborhoods. Learned of several new places to check out thanks to the collective experience and knowledge of this group.

Btw, I believe plb's name is Phil.

OMG, I am so embarrassed.

At 68, I had a "Senior Moment"!

I will edit above.

Thank you (and Cliff by PM) very much.

Mr. Hoffman is far more a Texan than I will ever be.

BTW:  it is not "out of school" to recount 'table talk' especially if it is  laudatory.  Very kind words were spoken both of you and MH.  Among them was that you are "very smart".  At that point I had to share that we have the same alma mater.
