Home Page Blocked

What's going on with Roadfood? Every time I go to the Home Page I get a grey screen that covers it with:

Location    Show   Rating   Search

Beneath each are choices, such as -- for Location, Near Me and Anywhere -- for Show, Restaurants tours and Best of Best

Looks normal to me. You might be having a problem with Java or Flash in your browser, (not sure what they're using). Have you tried using a different browser and seeing if you get a different result? I'm using Firefox and having no issues. Just fired up Safari and it looks OK, too.

I'm on Firefox and only see the "Restaurants Near Me" function on the right side of the screen.  Don't see the "Latest Reviews" section that normally comes up, nor can I access it when I click on that option.  The left side is normal.

Opening the page with Google Chrome provides the same result.

Internet Explorer shows the grey full screen with the options Michael describes.

Everything looks normal for me. Restaurants Near Me is the first thing that's popping up, (for some reason it thinks I'm in NOLA. Which is OK, as I'm planning a trip there in Oct.). The latest reviews is not working, though. Everything else shows up fine.

On my iPhone it's going directly to Restaurants Near Me, (which I was using earlier today).

I'm using Safari on my Mac. When I open Roadfood, I get a (restaurants near me) map of New Orleans on the top followed downward by a list of 31 well known restaurants in N.O.

I keep getting the New Orleans recommendations too. I clicked on latest reviews, and there's nothing new since yesterday.

I am not only no longer seeing latest reviews on the front page but also am now seeing ads - many of which are for chain restaurants, which seems sad and inappropriate.  Clickbait ads at the bottom of the page that appear to be related in some manner to food ala "The Untold Truth of Little Debbie".  Enquirer-ing minds need to know, I guess.

Kinda depressing to see this happen to a website that has been one of my absolute favorites for nearly a decade and a half at this point

Mr PoBoy: one might think you are getting New Orleans recommendations based on your name :-) but what is actually happening is that the website is attempting to a) determine your physical location and then b) display a map that is centered on your location and then c) overlay said map with links to roadfood-reviewed eateries in that area.

When/if the website fails to determine your physical location (in step a) , it sets New Orleans as the current physical location (step b) and then adds the push pins representing roadfood eats in that "current physical location" New Orleans

I'm still unable to get anything other than a gray page with IE. Chrome gives me the home page, but without any reviews... just a page with a map of Louisiana with the nearest restaurants to Gahanna, Ohio.

Hi TJ. The funny thing is, I'm from New Orleans, but I live in Virginia now. Anyway, this is a brand new phenomenon.

I don't know why, but I sometimes get the feeling that whoever is running this show doesn't give a rat's patoot as to whether it actually works.

Re: Home Page Blocked 2017/08/25 13:35:09 (permalink)
Mr Poboy:
The website has New Orleans set as the "default" location for the main web page "restaurants near you" view, and so it is the map displayed if the website is unable to determine your physical location

Its pure coincidence that you once lived there and are getting that map, no connection between the two

So you are not the only one getting that New Orleans map - I am getting it as well, and so is (it seems) MH, and probably hundreds or thousands of others too.

All:
For me, the more disturbing change to the main page is appearance of ads.  And not just any ads - ads for fast/chain food, and clickbait ads

Which makes sense, except I still get New Orleans even after allowing Roadfood to access my location. I'm just shy of 1100 miles from New Orleans.

I hadn't been to the home page in months until this thread, because since the last change I've found it absolutely useless. This new look is even worse, even though I'm apparently able to see (in Chrome) what is supposed to be there. It looks like something a beginning web designer might have turned in for a class project... and did not receive a passing grade.

Felix:
well, now that you have a car again, you can drive there :-)

on a more serious note, all this means is that even though you clicked the option to allow access to location, the website is running into some other (unnamed) problem where it still (despite that) cant determine your location, so following the new web page logic, its showing you New Orleans

I clicked on "Latest Reviews" on the list of options on the left side of the opening page and it shows the past format of restaurant reviews that many have been complaining they cannot see.
However, I have to click on it every time I open Roadfood.com to get that formatted page.
It won't automatically open that way when I click on Roadfood.com.

That reflects my current experience.  Not the way it should be, but a marked improvement over yesterday when I couldn't even access the "Latest Reviews" page.

OK. This is weird. Using IE I Googled Roadfood and picked the first one. I got the gray screen. So I picked the second one and got the home page, with the actual daily reviews.
