In the '70s I ate at the McDonald's across from the Arch de Triomphe. Even then, it was certainly a nicer experience than I've had in McD's both before and after. An ohhh, those pommel frites! Although I do wish I'd had that dipping sauce they described in the article----that sounds delicious.

    The tinyurl is this:

I have some fond memories of my stay in Paris (I stayed for a month), and my trips to McDonalds.  There is one on Rue de Rivoli which is a few steps from the bus stop I used to visit the Louvre.  Real espresso and cafe au lait from what the McCafe could be (and should be) and free Wi-Fi.  I'm not as adventurous for international food as I am for something I know that I can digest without distress.

And, yes, the pommes frites sauce (a mixture of dijon mustard and mayonnaise) is a pleasant change from Heinz ketchup.

Some of us have will power.

The only time I had the urge to set foot in McYummies while overseas was in Pisa. We bought a zero calorie Coke and they let us use the toilets.

When were you there? The last time I was in Paris was about 1979 and there was a McD's right there on the Champs Elysee'. On the right side of the road as you look north to the Arc. Didn't eat there, but I went in to see what it was like. Small, dark and none too clean.

1977.  I do not recall a McD on the Champs Elysee.  But I didn't go to the Champs on a regular basis, I lived in St. Mande' and went to school and worked in the area of Les Invalides.  I ate mainly at places in the 5th, 6th and 7th arrondissments.

I have often stopped at a McD for the toilet facilities.......they're always very clean.  And occasionally a Coke.  But that is in the US when I'm travelling.  Never, never, ever in France!  I drink wine or beer or water when I'm there and eat in bistros or small restaurants.

Thank goodness there was a McDonald's in Interlaken, Switzerland.

i was there for a week and dinners were included at the restaurant in our hotel.  We'd all go downstairs to the restaurant for dinner and then follow it up with a walk to McDonald's.

At that particular restaurant I didn't have a meal I liked.  I loved that McDonald's!  They didn't offer anything other than what we have on our menus here but it was quite welcomed by all of us.

I did have some awesome Rosti and a beer for lunch a different restaurant with outdoor seating in the dead of winter which was my favorite meal in Switzerland.

How sad...to think something was worse than McDonalds. I started this thread to show Mcdonalds can be better....not to suggest to go to one when in Europe...when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Heck, part of travel is to experience new food....not eat inferior american fast food!!!!!!

Understood. Now if only the French had Chambre de Gaufres, then the urge might be too strong. Maybe in Belgium.

Why did you love them?  Good preparation, the people??  Or was it just a lifesaver from the restaurant you had?  What year?

That McDonald's was a lifesaver for us.  We did have good meals during the day in Switzerland and wonderful snacks on street corners.  Sure wish I could find bags of hot roasted chestnuts here.

There's also something special about ordering Pommes Frites at McDonald's.
