We are visited a couple of times a month, March-November, by Fabian shrimp truck from Texas. They offer Gulf shrimp, oysters in the 'R' months, crawfish in the spring, and several varieties of crabmeat. I usually get the lump crabmeat.

This past week was their last visit until next spring, and I got a pint of wonderful oysters, and then  asked if they had any crabmeat. 'Only claw,' I was told. I bought a container, but didn't examine it until I got it home. Much to my surprise, it was Maryland blue crab.

Really good. Just not what I had anticipated. I lived in Alexandria, VA for 18 years, so I know Maryland crab well.

The interior shot of Shultz's reminds me so much of a place I used to eat at called Captain Chet's Bluepoint, which was in one of the working-class river wards of Northeast Philadelphia. That area used to have a lot of hole-in-the-wall places to get crabs, but most, if not all of them are gone, including Captain Chet's. I don't know if their crabs came from Maryland, although I would guess they did.

My mother started taking me there for what we called hardshell crabs when I was a kid. We'd also get mussels in red sauce and sometimes clams casino or shrimp cocktail. But the hardshell crabs were the highlight of the meal. When I was a little older, around my early to mid twenties, I went there a few times with friends. Then it went out of business.

Nothing like the Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus
Getting hard to find though.  Most canned crab meat comes from Asia and is a different species.

Plentiful in the waters along the Jersey Shore. Heck the Single A baseball team up the road is The Lakewood Blue Claws!

I know a Rhode Island Crab, but as long as you don't suggest eating Somali food in Minneapolis, he's pleasant enough.
