It might only be pennies, but it's the PRINCIPLE!

Went to IHOP this past Sunday with a friend.

It bothers me that they took the Western Omelet off of the menu.  They sell $13.50 omelets filled with cheeses, meats, vegetables and all sorts of things but...

If the omelet you want isn't on the menu you have to pay $10.50 for the omelet with cheese and then $1.50 a piece for each additional item.

So, I asked for peppers, onions and no cheese in mine.  I didn't feel like paying a $1.50 for a tablespoon of diced ham.

They don't deduct for my not wanting the cheese but that's okay.

What is not okay is that my bill read...

$10.50  Plain Omelet
No Cheese
$1.50 Red Peppers
$1.50 Green Peppers
$1.50 Onions

WHAT???  They divided the peppers into colors and charged for each?

My omelet that had way fewer ingredients than any of their $13.50 omelets cost $15.00!!!

It was only a matter of $1.50 but I told the waiter that I asked for peppers, not red and green peppers.  He said no problem and simply removed one from the bill.

I wonder how many of those $1.50 extras they make in a day!   That could add up and it seems quite fraudulent to me even though it's only pennies.

Well, goes to show how completely out of touch I am about restaurant prices. Your situation sounds completely fraudulent to me, mar52, but the idea of a plain omelet for ten dollars and fifty cents makes my little ol' 'child of depression children' heart shudder never mind the extra charges. Next time, you want such an omelet for that price, I'll buy four or five dozen eggs and y'all c'mon over and fix a couple of omelets here. I'll even divvy the remaining eggs with you. Good grief.

Completely agree...I see those menus charging 8.75 for 2 eggs, potatoes, and toast...WTH?

IHOP?!?  Was that your friend's pick?  Was he/she getting even with you for some evil deed you committed?  There's not a single Mom & Pop Diner in Marina Del Rey?

I know things can run a little more expensive in the Golden State, but $13.50 for an omelet is outrageous. Please tell me that price included Toast, Bacon, Orange Juice, and Coffee.

Come to Chicago for breakfast.  I'll take you to our local favorite (Even Joerogo, with his exceedingly high Pittston PA standards, liked this place) where $13.50 will feed both of us.  You pick up the tip.

Well yes to answer many of the questions.  My friend is ill and can eat few things that she likes due to chemo and that she's just strange.  She also has problems with mobility and can't ride far in a car without pain.  The the Marina del Rey  IHOP is quite close to her home and has easy access with parking by the door.   She happens to love their Swedish pancakes which are now called crepes.  Would it have been my choice?  Of course not!

But, any place around here charges that sort of price for omelets.

There are so many other foods I would rather spend that kind of money on but this was for her.

It's the $1.50 for something not ordered that bothers me the most.

Well now I feel like a dope.  Might have been good to mention the whole chemo thing from the start.  I forgive you.  You're still welcome to come to Chicago for Breakfast.

And yeah, I get how that buck-fifty for nuthin' might irk you.  Part of the problem is the danged computerized ordering and billing systems used by big chain restaurants.  Wait staff just need to punch in stuff and not think about it.

Holy cow!  Or chicken!  I just paid 99¢ the other day for a dozen extra large eggs that I use when I bake.  Which means each egg costs just a little over 8¢.  So that would make a 3-egg omelette 24¢.  And you paid $10.50???  And $1.50 for additional ingredients?  No way.

lleechef,
I'm sure you know, as a professional chef, Breakfast generally has a higher profit margin for restaurants than any other meal of the day.  You probably know a bus tray full of Diners that are only open from 6am to 2pm.  They make the bulk of their money in the early hours, stay open for Lunch, more or less, as a courtesy, then wrap up for the day.  Eggs, toast, Grits, and Biscuits & Gravy are cheap and filling.  And most places can charge a fair price for them and still make a good profit.  We're in total agreement over the outrageous IHOP prices. How they stay in business is beyond me.

Drag MH's curmudgeonly butt to Chicago and we'll feed you a proper Breakfast for the right price.

I'm pretty sure they don't need to go all the way to Chicago to find a White Castle.

I agree with the whole cost of living thing but $10.50 for a plain cheese omelet (and a cheeseless one at that) is pretty painful.  Mar, the next time you go there have them put the cheese on the side and take it home to use for something else.

Buddy,
I know breakfast has a high profit margin.  But really.  Gouging?  Enough is enough!

And if I'm going to drag MH's curmudgeonly butt to Chicago I want to eat something good!  And it had better NOT be White Castle or Waffle House!    I want an Italian beef, a Polish sausage and pizza.....from Burt's.  I got spoiled on the Chicago Crawl.  Oh!  And sweet potato pie!!!

Buddy,

No need for a road trip for breakfast. While I am a Waffle House regular there are tons of terrific spots for breakfast around here. One of my favorite places is a great greasy spoon place called the Grill & Skillet. Then there's a longtime favorite, Nancy's, in the city's Clintonville area. And just before they headed up to Chicago to meet you, Lisa and I met the Nairns at for breakfast at Tommy's Diner, one of Columbus' best breakfast spots. Come on down and we'll show you some fine breakfast spots. I might even take you to the Waffle House.

Here's our $10.25 omelet at a hipster oriented Wisconsin restaurant. They'll remove the cheese, bacon, ham and sausage for free.

If I'm on a budget, I can find a Denver Omelet for $5.50 at a local hole-in-the-wall.

It' only fraudulent if the charge you for them and don't include them.
if they include them they can charge for them. What they did is mis-represent what they were giving you.

Order a breakfast at Cracker Barrel with 3 scrambled eggs instead of 2.

Ate at Gaggan here a few months ago...set menu tab was B4,000 ($US115)++, can't imagine paying that much for a simple omelet, which here, Thai style, over rice, would cost about B45 ($US1.30).

Can't imagine what my Gaggan meal would have cost in So. Cal!

If you look at the amount of regulations put on small businesses in California its no wonder, and quite amazing there are as many small businesses still making a profit and still open for business.

The price of rent and food is a major consideration in Los Angeles which is also based on the price of everything the landlord is responsible for.  We collect a lot for rent,  but we also pay out a lot.
I believe it's part of the reason the Southern California area doesn't have a lot of the chain restaurants that you find across the country.

Some of the larger big restaurant chains, Red Lobster for example have a tiny print disclaimer at the bottom of their television commercials...  Price may be higher in California.

My Bride and I had Breakfast at a Mom & Pop that listed a 3 egg omelet on the menu. My bride wasn't that hungry and asked for a 2 egg omelet. The waitress said " All our omelets are 3 egg omelets", So my bride said, "OK, Make the omelet with 2 eggs and bring me the 3rd egg in the shell." Which they did then my Bride proceeded to drop it in the parking lot while getting in the car!

Looking at the website for my local Cracker Barrel, it looks like they've raised the price on the Country Boy by a dollar.  I used to tease my mom that all that food was less than the Sunday Homestyle Chicken but now it looks like its fifty cents more.
