Jimmy's Grotto (Waukesha, WI)
Or as the locals call it, "Jimmy Grotto's" or just "Grotto's".
My employer has a couple of locations in the Milwaukee area and Stricken_Detective
lives in Waukesha so I've been aware of Jimmy's Grotto
for some time now, so the Saturday after the Contingent dinner at Eric's Porter Haus I returned to the area to give Jimmy's the once-over.
Jimmy's has been around since 1946, although not all of those years have been spent at this location.
Their claim to fame is the "Ponza Rotta", which is like a deep-fried calzone.
I ordered mine with sausage, mushrooms (Jimmy's uses the canned version), and black olives. Unfortunately S_D was under the weather and unable to join me, so I ate my Ponza solo. The sauce had good flavor without being too sweet and I liked the sausage as well.
Since was a terrific day for the end of February I took a short walk around part of Waukesha after my lunch.
It's impossible to visit Waukesha and not learn (if you didn't already know) that it's the birthplace of Les Paul.
Jimmy's is a nice neighborhood place. It's not big or fancy, just a pizza joint that's been popular for a long time.
