Joe Huber's, Starlight IN, 8-23-16

It's starting to look like Wanderingjew's 2016 Midwest trip and my annual Ohio visit just might cross paths in southern Indiana on Tuesday, August 23, and after some top-secret, high-level negotiations we've decided to make this momentous occasion available to the general RF public.  Currently the plan is to meet at Joe Huber's Family Farm for a chicken dinner and interested parties are invited to attend.

Note, though, that plans are still preliminary at the moment and subject to change, so watch this space for further developments.

So we should buy our airline tickets, reserve hotels and rental cars to meet up with youz two guys while plans are still preliminary and subject to change, unlike our travel arrangements!

For a chance to eat fried chicken with ScreamingChicken and Wanderingjew the risk is well worth it. I'm planning my entire summer around this event.

In that case...I've opened up 30 days either side planning for contingencies!

Drive 250 miles one way to eat chicken with yinz two?  Nah.  Oh, it's totally worth it for the chicken.  But the company is a little iffy.

Brad,

You forgot to mention that during these top secret, high-level negotiations we specifically focused on how to EXCLUDE the ChiTownDiner from all of our Roadfood activities.  It will be tough to keep him away, but it can be done.  I believe in you, wanderingjew!

Not to worry...there are a lot of miles between Westmont and Starlight.  Why, almost anything could happen...I hear there's a cornfield just off of US-41 that he should visit!

Never having heard of the Illiana Expressway I had to look. And I can see why it might not be the best route for CTD to take to get to southern Indiana.

CHICAGO -- The Federal Highway Administration has dropped its objections to a judge’s ruling against the Illiana Expressway, which could mean the end of the road for the controversial project.

Re: Joe Huber's, Starlight IN, 8-23-16 2016/04/04 01:36:06 (permalink)
The "Illiana Expressway" has been an ongoing controversy for years now.  It would run about 8o-100 miles, connecting I-55 in Illinois to I-65 in Indiana.  It would potentially allow motorists, primarily truckers, to bypass a big chunk of congestion as they approach Chicago's city limits.

Unfortunately, it would accomplish this by forcing property owners to relinquish land along that stretch of the map.  I know that kind of eminent domain situation is not uncommon in many civic construction projects.  However, this plan would disrupt entire communities and cause significant environmental damage, both in the short term during construction, and long term simply by virtue of its existence.

It's been an on again/off again boondoggle for years, and may finally be dead after the feds withdrew their challenge against the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

And that's your civics lesson for today.  Now back to our regularly scheduled thread about giving ChiTownDiner a hard time.

Chibears15 and I will be in the Indy area for the first half of my trip. I was going to head to Kentucky during the second half of our trip but we are planning to jump ahead for one meal  to coordinate our meeting with Brad Chicken

Just thought I would bump the thread.
I was thinking of naming some folks who live in the area but I figured I'd wait till later on until I get that mean.

I have been to Hubers 3 times since this thread started.
I recommend getting the " family style dinner " if you have an appetite.

If I lived as close as you did, I would have gone back even more times that that. Man, do I miss those amazing fried biscuits  when I visited with Mayor Al 8 years back.

The fried biscuits and apple butter are great as always, I got a chance to stir the apple butter at a festival some years ago and got shown up by a little old lady. Mayor Al spoke highly of you and some others on this site. Don't forget about " The Chicken House " it is at the bottom of the hill on the way down , A true Roadfood stop.

I remember Al enjoyed those chicken livers. I had the country ham last time, I think I'll have those chicken livers this time.

I'm sad too. I still can't believe he's gone.

The Chicken House is over in St. Joseph.  Groucho, about how far is it from Huber's?

Brad , there are only a few ways to leave Hubers and W st.Joe road stops at the Chicken House and Grantline road.
This is the way I go , it is probably 8 miles.  Worth it , I'll buy you a beer.

I was thinking of taking St. Joe Rd. all the way to US-31 and then old 403 to Charlestown.  I appreciate the offer but I'll probably have to pass, what with having a ways to go before the end of the day.

Great. I'll PM you within the next few weeks weeks once we have additional info and we can exchange e-mails, cell phone #'s etc.

On an aside, due to Chi Town Diner's interest in a potential diversion to Bloomington IN for a Stromboli, we may force The Screaming Chicken to have a later than planned dinner although I still have no idea what time our dinner will be since we have about 10 or 20 stops planned for that day, on the way down from Indy to Starlight, I"m hoping it's later rather than earlier.. Right now the diversion is a only in the early stages of discussion and Chi Town Diner may have to make a special trip on his own or we can drop him off in Bloomington and he can walk to Starlight from there, it really isn't that far of a walk anyway.

No problem; we should be able to make adjustments on the fly.  Right now my plan is to leave the house around 6am CDT and I'm guesstimating it's a 6 to 7 hour drive from Stoughton to Starlight, but since I lose an hour due to the time zone change I'm sure it'll be 2pm EDT or later by the time I'm in the area.  And if dinner will be later than that I do have a few stops I could make along the way...

Karl, could you locate Carrollton, KY on the map and possibly give me a rough estimate of the time it'll take to reach it from Huber's?  My route would be Old 3 out of Charlestown to IN-3 and IN-62 into Madison, and US-421 to US-42 into Carrollton.  Thanks!

Finally got out there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and the chicken and biscuits were both as good as advertised.

The detours in Louisville, however, almost made the trip not worth it, which is really saying a lot for this guy, who loves a good day trip.
