I'd originally planned to eat dinner at Joe Huber's on the 23rd but after figuring that it would be an 80-mile round trip from where I was staying and the next morning I was eastbound anyway, it made sense to have lunch on the 24th.
The weather was excellent!
My table was along the east wall right about where the dining room opens up, maybe about 2 tables north of last year.
When the waitress came over she glanced at me and her eyes narrowed into a pair of narrow, dagger-shooting slits. "Say," she hissed in a voice seething palpably with venomous rage, "weren't you here last year with that salad-eater
?" I answered in the affirmative but fearing for my safety I quickly assured her that had I been present when the salad was requested I would've never let it happen, which seemed to appease her although she did mumble something about gutless cowards allowing such an order to be placed and how they all should've been sent to a "re-education center" or something like that. And since my lunch was eventually set in front of me and not hurled at my head she apparently believed me.
And what an excellent lunch it was! Not a clinker in the bunch and as good as the piping hot chicken was, I really enjoyed the green beans.
While I'm not much of a dessert person, Huber's makes theirs from scratch so I figured I could squeeze in a little something after the entree. I gave it some thought and eventually decided on...a bowl of tasty, tender but not mushy dumplings.
After lunch I checked out the grounds a little bit and then headed down the road to the farm stand/winery/distillery complex where I picked up some bottles of wine for Mrs. Chicken. The Hubers have this folksy image but clearly their empire is growing; I think they're more like the Kennedys than they are Ma & Pa Kettle.
Incidentally, should anyone ever need to get to Joe Huber's from Indiana highway 60, the new Star Valley Road is the way to go. It doesn't have nearly the grades of Dow Knob Road, which means this year when I got back to 60 I wasn't smelling my brakes.
