Last Minute Request - Crystal Lake IL

I will be in Crystal Lake Illinois tomorrow 3/30, and I will have some free time although I dont know if it will come at lunch or dinner or late

Open to anything good except a long (more than an hour) dinner.

Anything that takes me in the direction of back to Cincinnati will be a huge plus

There appears to be a Portillos in Crystal Lake, so that will be my default if nothing better is suggested.

I could do a lot worse than Portillos :-)

    TJ,
Knowing you're a fan of the Italian Beef Sandwich, let me suggest Johnnie's in Arlington Heights.  The original location is in Elmwood Park, but this second outpost serves up an equally good product.  It should also be noted that Arlington Hts. meets your requirement for taking you in the direction of Cincinnati without straying too far from the interstate.

Be sure to get yourself a large Italian Ice to wash down the Beef Sandwich.  They serve lemon or watermelon.  I prefer the lemon, as the watermelon has kind of an artificial taste.  The only drawback at both Johnnie's locations is the institutional French fries.  While more and more places are serving a fresh cut version, Johnnie's is sticking with Sysco.  Everything else you'll get there will be top notch.

If you find yourself in the mood for something other than an Italian Beef (Although by mentioning Portillo's, I suspect you've already made your mind that is what you want), post during the day Wednesday and I'll come up with something else.

    Have a great trip!
    Buddy

    Buddy-
I stopped at the Arlington Heights location of Johnnie's Beef two years ago.  I was thrilled to see that they didn't have nearly the line that you would normally find at Elmwood Park.  The beef was every bit as good, but that watermelon Italian ice was not.  So artificial, I threw most of it away.

    bb,
Agreed. I generally like watermelon flavored drinks and ices, but Johnnie's version was not good.  The lemon ice is far superior.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Roney's/Roy Rogers, whatever.  Did you make it to Johnnie's and how did you like it?

Unfortunately, I did not make it to Johnnies because when I left, it was dark and a heavy rainstorm had started, and I did not trust finding my way there under those conditions

I never got out of rain all the way home that night, and didnt get out of heavy rain until I was nearly to Indianapolis

Sorry you missed it.  Glad you got home safe.  Guess you'll need to drive back up here sometime.
