Let's Rank The Chain Sub Shops

YES, there are many independent places that make Subs, Grinders Hoagies, WHATEVER you want to call them better than these but for this discussion we're only talking about CHAIN Shops.
Here's my list:
  1. Capriotti's
  2. Mikes Subs
  3. Cousins
  4. Port O Subs
  5. Subway
  6. Blimpie
  7. Jimmy Johns
  8. Firehouse
  9. How would YOU rank them?

Publix Deli...they use Boar's Head, which is as good as it gets in these parts!

Pretty much the only one I go to regularly is Dibella's.  Chain or not they have good subs.

I used to get Penn Station occasionally and I liked their Italian (which I'm sure isn't authentic but it's still good).  If Jason's Deli counts as a sub shop it's decent as well.

We have a new Charley's Steakery near my house and their big selling point now is....chicken fingers.  Not sure how that fits but I guess they want to compete with Raising Cane's.

I had a tuna salad sub from Subway once.  It was meh.  We make our own out of top quality Italian cold cuts from Carfagna's.

As far a chains, Subway would not make any list, pre sliced and cheap bread. Jersey Mikes originally from up the road from here, is the BEST way to go. Quality meat and great Italian bread. I'll assume their countless chains  still make them the way the Jersey stores do!

Never assume. When Jersey Mike's opened here some 20 years ago I was looking forward to good stuff. But when my "Italian" sub showed up with boiled ham and white American cheese on really lousy bread, not to mention poor quality "Genoa" salami, well ... .

I have had a pretty fair sausage and peppers sub at Penn Station. The thing is, we make better ones at home.

Of the ones on the list we frequent our local Jersey Mike's the most often. Quality meats and good cheeses and fresh baked bread make for a pretty good chain sandwich. Haven't had an experience like MH at ours. Next I'd have to say that Penn Station does a decent job. I like their Italian. Tasty sandwich. And, while I'm not a big fan of fries, they put out a good fry.
Not a fan of Firehouse, at all. Subway, either. Blimpie doesn't rate at all IMO. Never have cared for their product.

I live between a Subway and a Jersey Mike's.  Both are sub par.  Okay, I'm laughing at myself.

Subway is perfect when my power goes off because they're not on the same grid.  Only then but I admit to stopping there once in awhile when I'm in a VERY lazy mode.

I didn't like Firehouse at all when I tried it in Texas.  Subway is better!

Looks like McAlister's was left off the original list as well as Penn Station.

I received an online coupon for a free Jersey Mike's sub on my birthday.  My printer ink was low that day and Jersey Mike's scanner could not read the bar code, hence- no free sub.

Subway and Jersey Mikes shouldn't even be used in the same sentence. Subway uses factory sliced cheap cold cuts and horrible tasting almost white bread rolls defrosted and put in an oven to finish.. Mike's is a real sub shop...at least here in Jersey...real Italian bread and fresh sliced in front of you quality cold cuts.... Subway is the McDonalds of subs...and even that's being kind!!!

I am right there with you Ann about the smell at Subway.  When that bread is baking, the smell can be truly awful.

I have never been in a Subway so I don't know about the smell.  That one tuna salad sub MH brought home.  I took one bite.  Scraped the tuna salad off and threw the rest away.  Ate about 2 more bites of the tuna salad and threw that away too.

You need to go to that Italian place in Santa Monica and get a Godfather.
Drives me crazy being in a food waste land, best I can do is subway or this "Real" (Sarcasm) Philly Cheese Steak place that puts "American Swiss" on their "authentic" cheese steaks. They also bake this huge white bread roll and "stuff it" with four oz of meat...... Bread Sandwich.

I've eaten at DiBellas's in Robinson a few times and I don't like their bread.  I'm not a huge sub man though and I've only been to Subway, Blimpies, and Jimmy Johns out of the list.  To be honest, I don't like any of them.  If I had to pick, it would probably be the pizza sub from Subway.  Sad, I know.

IMO, these companies specialize in giving false hope to out of work, 50ish, middle managers. They sell a "secret" plan to success, but in fact, suck away life savings, As any Roadfooder knows, the "secret" is high quality at low prices. Anyone who wants to be in the sub biz, should spend only a couple of hundred $$ and visit top independent shops. I'd be willing to bet that the owner, and his wife, are working really, really hard, for a well deserved living. If you like the lifestyle that you see start your own shop.

Well, the #13 Italian is pretty good. Tell them to go easy on the liquids or it'll be drowned in oil and vinegar. They also make a passable Tuna Salad. They cook their own roast beef every day, so that's usually a safe bet, too.
