I had a great  meal here last summer
It's a very local chain- in Lexington KY only.
The chicken and dumplings were some of the best I've had anywhere

If you are willing to drive a little way out of town, Hall's on the River offers good food in a very pleasant setting.
https://roadfood.com/restaurants/halls-on-the-river/  I've enjoyed their Hot Brown (traditional version), fried green tomatoes, and, of course, beer cheese.

If you like bottled soft drinks, consider having an Ale-8-One.  Made in Winchester, and widely available throughout Kentucky, it's a ginger/citrus carbonated drink. But watch out -- it has more caffeine per serving than Coca-Cola.

Philip's Deli is a trip to another time. Cheap, delicious and pure roadfood.

I've been to Ramsey's twice.  The first location I went to several years ago is gone now.  It was the original one downtown (or close to it) and had more of a cozy feel.  That is partly because we went in winter and it was dark and snowy.  In April we went early evening to a location that felt more like a strip mall and it didn't have quite the same vibe for me.  The food was still good but as with many things not quite as good as I remembered.  However, nobody at the table got the dumplings so there might be a reason to return.  We did enjoy the fact that apple fritters are on the list of veggies.

Though it's about 20 minutes outside of Lexington, we really enjoyed Wallace Station Deli and Bakery.  I think we all just got sandwiches or burgers but all really good.

If you want some good fried chicken I'd suggest Richie's Fast Food on Roosevelt Blvd. Soul food at it's finest. Don't let the neighbourhood throw you off. I think they also have a location over on Georgetown Rd just inside the Circle.

Richie's is real good and the neighborhood did not phase me in the least (I live in New Orleans 9th Ward) but some more sensitive people may find the area to be a little seedy.

It's a Triple-D site but we really enjoyed this place about 15 minutes from New Circle.

Hi Charlie,
New Circle rd is the city of Lexington's perimeter rd. It runs all around the city, hence the Circle. Parkette Drive in is on the Southeast side of the Circle and they're a pretty good joint for chicken and burgers. The Circle is also a prime hangout for local cops looking for speeders, so be warned, but it is a decent way of getting around the city. I do indeed enjoy a good Root Beer, usually something from a glass bottle made with pure cane sugar from small, local manufacturers. A nice home made on is good, too.

Thanks for the import. For a great tasting root-beer, go to Bethel, Connecticut. On Rt. 53, there is a great place for a hand made root-beer. It is called, "Sycamore Drive-In.  sycamoredrivein.com  Voted Best Root-Beer Float.

an hour and 15 minutes south of Lexington is Corbin, Kentucky. The Rootbeer Stand brews their own rootbeer and it's the finest I've ever tasted. Also, there was a murder there. http://chowpapi.com/on-the-road-with-rl-reeves-jr-the-rootbeer-stand-in-corbin-kentucky/

FWIW, the Root Beer stand here in Cincinnati (in a northern community called Sharonville) looks EXACTLY like the one pictured in your article, SC.

Mr Google did not lead me to the connection between the two, but there certainly is one.......

There used to be a connection via some sort of licensing agreement but it expired decades ago, or so I hear.

TJ Jackson, I have a good friend who lives in the Pleasant Run area of Cincinnati. I'll have to give him a buzz, and tell him about it. I'm sure he might know about it.

HI all,
What a lovely (or should I say) busy city. My first dinner here in Lexington is at Sav's, the West Africa eatery on South Limestone. Wow! Interesting. Had the Peanut GOAT. (Large). Tomorrow, it's either Ramsey, or Hall's on the River. When I leave on Thursday, it could be Richie's. Sadly, Josie's doesn't open until 8:00 a.m. That's when my class start. Any recommendation as to where to go for breakfast? Thanks, Charlie.

Last night was at the, Hall's on the River. Tried the Hot Brown. Holy ****, loaded with cheddar cheese. The juices from the ham and the turkey combined with the grease of the cheddar cheese, enhances the slightly saturated bread on the bottom. Very good.

I am glad you enjoyed Hall's on the River.  I've had great meals there, but the last time the food was only so-so. That was about three years ago, so it is good to know that they are back on their game. I'll be in the Lexington area again in October, and maybe we'll give it a try.

It was a so-so as well. I still like the fact it was in a cast iron skillet. The most interesting thing on the menu was Lamb fries! I'm not going to say anything more....lol. I still like the Sav's better, different tho.

Since Josie's doesn't open till 8:00 a.m., very disappointed, class start at 8:00a.m. I ended up going to Spaldings Bakery, Since I got up too early in the morning, I started to read reviews on local breakfast places. Than I came across Spaldings Bakery. Everyone said, get there before noon. Expect to see a line, sometimes the line goes around the building. Best donuts around. So, I decided to go there, open 6:30 a.m. Only 4 in line, not bad for me....lol....... OMGosh, what a f**king Donut! First bite, best donut I have ever had.
After the last class, decided to make sure I don't leave Kentucky without a good fried chicken. I did go to Richie's and grab some fried chicken to take back home to Indiana. Nice! Come to fine out, she told me there is one in Evansville, IN name Indies. I'll have to check it out.
Thanks to everyone who had helped me to enjoyed my time in Lexington. Thank You!
