Marinating shrimp - shells on or off?

The subject line is pretty self-explanatory.  Shells on or off?  Does the acidity of the marinade make a difference?

With shells off after 2 minutes shrimp become mush.

    Exaggerating, of course.

Shells on, then pop them on the grill or in the pan. Doesn't take too long, either,

1/2 C lemon juice???  They're already cooked if you're marinating them in that.
