McRib is Back

Ocean City McDonald's began selling the McRib today for a limited time. I think I got the first one.  They haven't had them in Ocean City in years.

Actually, there's no mystery. It's lean pork trimmings that are formed together with meat glue in the patty shape. The time it takes to gather enough trimmings together for the amounts McDonald's needs is why it's not on a menu all the time. While not a sandwich I'd go out of my way for, the very few times I've had one they weren't bad. I've paid more for worse, at better places.

The McRib.  The last couple of times it has come back I've thought 'Good, I have to go get one' and after I did I thought 'Why did I want a McRib?'.  I think I'll go and get a gyro instead...

I remember when I was young and would go to 76ers games at the Spectrum during the Dr. J era, they had a boneless rib sandwich that was very similar to the McRib available at some concession stands for a few years. I used to like it. But I had different standards when I was 12.

And I'm not a McDonald's hater. I like their burgers enough to have one - usually a quarter-pounder - occasionally.

McRib-style pork sandwiches are one of my guilty pleasures in life, whether they come from McDonald's, the local Kwik-E-Mart or the grocery store freezer case.

I've tried over the years and my opinion never changes.  Besides the spongy texture, the heartburn that follows kills any enjoyment I might have had.

I ate one today, and have come to the conclusion it's a thinner, longer, dryer, less tasty version of their sausage breakfast patty. The ratio of bun to anything else is WAY too high, the two pickle slices are just sad, and the onions are either cut too large or not large enough. The sauce is pretty OK, but then I tend to like their BBQ sauce.

So I've eaten one. I'm done now.
