Mike's Grill (IL)
On Illinois 1 just south of I-74 and Danville is Mike's Grill, a 50-year-old drive-in. On my recent trip to Ohio I stopped for a cheeseburger after eating one at Gross', which is just a block or 2 south. Mike's menu is more extensive but I like Gross' burger better.
Right next door is Mike's Chill, an ice cream stand. I'll bet it's a popular place on warm summer evenings but it was pretty dead at noon on a Wednesday.
The exterior. 30 years ago the parking lot was probably full of station wagons and kids in Little League uniforms on weeknights; nowadays it's probably minivans and half the kids are wearing soccer shirts:[URL='http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb109/Brad_Olson/Roadfood/0004.jpg']
And my burger, eaten at a park just a few miles south in Westville. The 3rd photo is the Gross' cheeseburger:
It was pretty good but my guess is that the fries are the standard food service variety, although I'd be happy to be wrong. The bun was toasted and the burger was a little bigger and a little cheesier than the one I got at Gross'; it was pretty good but it still came in 2nd in a close 2-burger race. Maybe next time I'll get a burger from each place and eat them side by side for a more accurate comparison.
Apparently both places are surviving well despite being so close together, so they must be doing things right.
