Milwaukee Meet-up on Saturday, December 3 (George Watts, etc.)

Hello All,

The Contingent (the Wisconsin/Illinois RF group) is planning a meet-up in Milwaukee for Saturday, December 3 (time TBA).

The main event will be a visit to George Watts Tea Room, which is closing on December 31. See the announcement and the genesis of this meet-up here: http://forums.roadfood.com/George-Watts-in-Milwaukee-to-Close-December-31-m846322.aspx.

This gathering is very much a work in progress, but after George Watts we will visit Glorioso's (an Italian market on Milwaukee's East Side), one or two (or more?) Mexican/Latin American places on the city's south side, and maybe another couple of places.

We'll nail down a start time soon, and we'll figure out a basic itinerary as the days unfold.

I am going to try to fit George Watts in by mid-December but I will be out of town for this weekend.  I do love the George World Tour!  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The Roadhouses will do their best to adapt to the timetable.  A 10:30am start is doable and intriguing in that we can get both breakfast and lunch in one sitting from a place we won't have around much longer.  At that point I don't know how much interest we'll have in another quick turn around meal, but maybe some shopping in between will work off a few calories.

Mrs and Mr Maki say that an 11 am start time would work for them, so how about just doing that? I'm pretty sure George Watts has the full menu (breakfast + lunch) starting at 11, so maybe we can get a little of each to kick off the event.

Ann suggested we head over to Old World Third St. afterward to raid Usinger's, the Cheese Mart, and other places. This sounds like a good idea because we'll only be buying food, and not necessarily eating it, so it could be a non-food food stop.

After that, we could work our way over to Glorioso's, a request from Mrs Maki. (BTW, I can't remember her own screen name. Ferris Bueller or something like that?)  That is also an eating-optional stop.

By the time all of this is done, it'll probably be around 3:30 or 4:00 pm. The possibilities are endless at this point, but it would be fun to take the show to a place or two that is unfamiliar to us. Chuck T. has recommended Chilango Express in West Allis, a taco place in a gas station. Another place possibly to consider is Vani's Kitchen in West Allis, an Indian place that I've only had contact with at India Day at Humboldt Park in Milwaukee (and the only thing I tried was biryani, which was delicious).

There are many other places in West Allis besides, and it would be fun to try a new place or two. This is Ann's neck of the woods, so perhaps she's seen a place around that she'd like to try out.

Most breakfast items aren't available after 11 am with a couple of exceptions-a couple of omelets and a quiche. However, there are wonderful options to select from in addition to the above mentioned items. And we can still get ginger toast and sunshine cake! 11 am is fine with me.

A taco place in a gas station?!?  If only it was located in a sketchy neighborhood, it would be perfect.  Alas, the GoogleMaps street view makes it looks pretty safe.  I guess we can give 'em a shot in spite of that.

Missing the breakfast menu at George Watts doesn't bother me.  I'm not much of an omelet guy, so the only things of interest were the pancakes and the parfait.  At 13 bucks a pop, I figure I can find something else on the after 11am menu.

The French Toast at Watts is supposedly quite good, but I didn't see it on the menu. Maybe it's a revolving special of the day? In any case, I'm good with an 11 am start at Watts. I have my eye on the Chicken Pot Pie, and I'm hopeful and certain that Ginger Toast and Sunshine Cake will be on the table somehow.

Chilango does sound rather intriguing, so let's plan on that for the post-Glorioso's part of the day. If we're still hungry after that, West Allis has a variety of other places to choose from.

The Kopp's flavors of the day (Turtle Sundae and Reese's Peanut Butter Kupps) don't excite me, but we won't be too far away for those who want to indulge.

I sent out a FB message for the meet-up. So far, participants include myself, Ann, the Roadhouses (both of you, right?), and the Makis. My husband may decide to join in, so we may be looking at 6-7 participants to start.

Of course, all Rfers are invited!

The management at Watts has a long memory. We were banned many years ago after the incident with the scone. It still bothers me to think about it. Enjoy your tea & crumpets.

Is there not a statute of limitations?  Perhaps you'll be allowed back in in 2017!  Has the TRUE story been told?

Jim, you and your family were so misunderstood when you came dressed for (s)cones. I think that was a huge mistake on their part.

Re: Milwaukee Meet-up on Saturday, December 3 (George Watts, etc.) 2016/12/04 20:12:27 (permalink)
Many thanks and kudos to quijote (and his faithful sidekick, Sancho Panza) for his light-handed approach to organizing yesterday's tour.  Watt's Teas Room was the only certainty of the day with everything else lined up on an "as needed" basis.

We were lucky to get into Watt's.  Apparently we weren't the only ones who'd heard about their impending demise, so reservations were highly recommended.  We didn't have one.  But quijote put on his puppy dog eyes and worked his way into the hostesses heart.  We were among the first to arrive for the lunch menu seating so they managed to squeeze us in.

We ordered three entrees and some sides for the six of us.  A deconstructed Beef Wellington, Ham and Caramelized Onion Quiche, and Chicken Potpie were the mains.  We passed around a satisfying cup of Tomato Bisque Soup to start.  And of course we got a plate of the house signature dish, Ginger Toast.  Everything was quite good, but oh my, that Ginger Toast was extraordinary.  Thick slices of whole grain toast are slathered in a combination of crushed crystallized ginger, butter and sugar (and crushed Graham Cracker crumbs if you believe certain recipes), then set under a broiler to achieve a toothsome texture and wonderful flavor.  A couple of slices of light and refreshing Sunshine Cake rounded out our first lunch.

Next up was a quick run to Milwaukee's Historic Old World Third Street district where we picked up some nice bargains at the Usinger outlet store and the Wisconsin Cheese Mart.  That was followed by a visit to Groppi's Italian Market where we got a fat Cubano Panini to take home.

Next up was a visit to the Bay View neighborhood where we scoped out Bumstead Provisions, a hip sandwich joint, for future tours.  Then took a short walk over to Vanguard for gourmet Encased Meats (the Roadhouse clan shared a Thai style Sausage, quijote and Sancho Panza enjoyed a Korean version) Baked Potato Balls, and Wisconsin style Poutine topped with shredded braised Veal, Onion Gravy, and fried Cheese Curds.  All very tasty, and an obvious nod to the long gone Hot Doug's.

From there it was a short drive to Chilango Express for gas station Tacos!  Chilango makes the argument for opting for gas station food almost every time (except those roller hot dogs).  I've found exceptional Pasties at a BP station in Green Bay, WI; wonderful Middle Eastern grub at a Shell in Kansas City; and although not my favorite, some pretty good 'Que at KC Joe's in a Shamrock station.

Chilango Express adds one more name to the filling station list.  All entrees are served on or with fantastic house made Tortillas.  I ordered three Tacos; Al Pastor, Carne Assada, and Lengua, topped with a variety of options including Huitlacoche (corn smut), and Nopales (pickled cactus leaves).  We also got an excellent Tamale that was delivered by mistake and we couldn't bear to see it go away.

All in all, a dandy way to spend a fall/winter Saturday before everyone's Holiday schedule goes crazy.  If we all have as much fun with our relatives as we do with our Contingent friends, it'll be a pretty good season.

Fat chance.

An excellent write-up, Buddy Roadhouse. It was a fun day, and we enjoyed seeing the Roadhouse clan from Chicago, as well as the MilwFoodlovers duo from right here in Milwaukee.

Thanks for the report Buddy. And thanks Quijote for adding Chilango Express to the itinerary. I live right around the corner from them. Glad you got to go. Those tortillas are so good. They destroy just about everyone else's around here that I've tried.

Watts Tea Shop - December 12, 2016

Got to Watts Tea Shop yesterday with my mom and Patti.  I had the date picked out on Friday but worried about the snow storm.  Because of that, I did not make a reservation.  Since they are closed Sunday and don't open til 9am, we called enroute and were granted a 10am reservation.

We arrived to a half full dining room and after being seated with menus ordered our teas. I went with Sp[ice - orange and lots of spices.

I went for A Walk In The Woods, a nice fluffy omelet filled with sauteed crimini mushrooms and Boursin cheese.  While prices are higher than a diner, the ambiance is superb and ingredients first rate.  No canned mushrooms, all fresh fruit, solid jam choice, and the best house made English muffins around.  Plated on china with excellent service.

The star will always be the Ginger Toast...and not a crumb remained.  The restaurant released the recipe and it's pretty simple.

http://archive.jsonline.com/features/recipes/104868234.html

Of course, we finished with a slice of Sunshine Cake and it was oh so soft.  Our waitress asked us to wait briefly because they were frosting a new batch.  So good....

Our plan had been for a moderate day with a few more stops and then to return for High Tea at 2pm before heading back pre-rush hour to Chicago.  As we departed, I approached the podium and was told all reservations between now and closing except for 9am breakfast are gone.  Glad we got in the last slice!

Thanks for providing an environment without 50 TV's, acid rock and yeah man.  It was so serene, peaceful and friendly as we talked to all the tables around us and enjoyed our food at a comfortable pace. The gift store downstairs went 50% off as we entered and we picked up a few genuine bargains.  Hear that Macy's, Kohl's, Pennies and Sears!

But most of all, Thanks for the Memories!
