For those of you traveling by car, a coworker told me that she had some good barbecue at BP Smokehouse in Tomah last week.  However, I don't know the details of her grading scale.

Buddy, a semantic question- I'm wondering why a Diner category was created just for Al's Diner  (besides the obvious reason that "diner" is in their name) when breakfast food is all they serve.  They don't serve lunch foods like sandwiches, soups, or salads.  They can call themselves whatever they want (and maybe they did have a broader menu when they first opened- perhaps we can ask them that when we go), but my question is in regards to your categories.  Is it the counter format that makes it a diner?

Because you are my darling daughter, whom I love, and not some random poster trying to stir up trouble, I'll answer you accordingly:

"Because I say so, that's why.  If you wanna organize the damn Crawl you can call it whatever the hell you want.  Now shut up and eat yer vegetables."  Followed by a gentle kiss on the forehead.

ChiTownDiner
I find your question to be relatively "snark free and carefully thought out" and may therefore be eligible for reply. Thank you for your consideration.

See above.

I thought the consensus among us beer folks was that a brewpub did not warrant an official stop. I'd possibly be up for an afterhours independent study.

If you need to cut...

Thank you for letting me know.  I know there are a handful of people who are really passionate about the brewery stop (at least one of them is likely riding in our car in MSP), and if even a few more thought it was a priority, it would be a no brainer.  As it is, the brewery seems like a natural for the cutting room floor.

Personally, the markets aren't really exciting me especially since we are flying and can't take anything home...

We're not going to the markets to purchase fresh produce or meats.  There are dozens of stalls serving outstanding prepared foods from MSP's New Immigrant cuisine (Hmong, Somali, etc.).  Contrary to what some will argue (i.e. whine about), these stops represent a modern, ethnic take on classic Roadfood principles--

From the website:
Roadfood means great regional meals along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods. It is sleeves-up fare made by cooks, bakers, pitmasters, and sandwich-makers who are America’s culinary folk artists.
Roadfood restaurants are almost always casual and affordable. They are diners, small-town cafes, seaside shacks, drive-ins, barbecues, and bake shops. The best of them are colorful places enjoyed by locals (and savvy travelers) for their character as well as their menu.
It is our intention that Roadfood lead the way to:
  • great local color
  • the best regional specialties
  • unforgettable meals that are the highlights of the trip
Keep an open mind and I'm willing to bet big money the markets will provide that kind of experience.

Bonk
...and to us three ice cream stops seems redundant.

You are correct.  One of them will be eliminated from the regular itinerary and moved to Independent Study.

Keep those cards and letters coming!

Up until reading SC's post I would have voted with Danny.  We've had several meals in Tomah during our many years of travel to MSP and have yet to have a good one.  We had high hopes for the TeePee Supper Club and it was always a disappointment.  Doesn't really matter since it is now history.

Based on past experience, I would've said the best food in Tomah can be found at the Culver's just off the interstate.  Of course, BP Smokehouse didn't exist back then, so this might be your opportunity to take one for the team.

We will be back in MSP, Sunday night May 5 and our flight doesn't leave until 1:15 pm the next day, so anything we miss on the tour or wanted to visit that isn't on the tour we can hit up for dinner Sunday night or Breakfast the next morning.

Re: 2019 Crawl Location Discussion Thread 2019/04/12 17:15:05 (permalink)
Howdy folks!

We've got a bad news/good news situation today.  I was very much looking forward to bringing you all to one of my favorite MSP restaurants, Baku.  We shared a brilliant meal there about ten years ago with Davydd and wife Nancy.  Their specialty is food from Russian and from the areas surrounding the country.  Kind of a "Best of the Soviet Union" Cuisine (no jokes).

Unfortunately, the only way they'd take our group was as a banquet event, costing a minimum of $40 per person.  That would have included, according to my contact, about 75% of the items on the regular menu.  Probably a good value if we were walking in hungry, but considering it would have been the last stop of a long day of eating, I decided it wasn't worth it.

So, bad news: Baku is out.

The good news: That gets us one step closer to the final list of 21 food stops.

The better news: After careful consideration, Manning's Cafe has been eliminated as the weakest link.  So we are potentially down to our final list.  I'm still considering dropping one more place and moving the Brewery stop back into the itinerary, but for now here's what our weekend looks like, in no particular order:

Jim,
Glad to do it.  Genuinely sorry you and Bobbi won't be able to join us.

Paul,
The above list is just the end of the beginning of the process.  Now comes the fun part; putting it all into a carefully timed out schedule, following a geographically logical route.  That's doable in the next 12 days, right?

Some of you will find it shocking that I'm doing this organizational work on a...SPREADSHEET (cue the dramatic organ music)!

I need some feedback from you folks.  One of the potential non-eating stops is Can-Can Wonderland, a very cool artist designed mini-golf course.  It's one of the few places where we need to make a firm reservation, so I'd like to see a headcount of how many of you are interested in attending.  I haven't chosen the specific day or time yet.  That will depend on the response I get.

Just as a word of encouragement, I included a stop at a slot car raceway as part of The Contingent's Taste of Des Plaines Tour back in 2013.  After some initial skepticism, there was near unanimous praise for putting that activity on the itinerary.  All I can say is, "Give Mini-Golf a Chance."

Hoping to get at least 15 people involved in this stop.

I'm somewhat interested, but do you have a day or time in mind? We were planning on going off on our own some, so knowing that would play a major role in our decision.

We'd be more likely to do it if it was in the afternoon, but by no means should alter any of the itinerary because of that.

Re: 2019 Crawl Location Discussion Thread 2019/04/16 17:26:41 (permalink)
We're getting down to crunch time and some hard decisions.  After talking with our local representatives in MSP, I've scratched Tavern 4&5 from the list and brought Surly Brewing back on.  The main reason for going to T4&5 was for their nouveau take on Hot Dish.  Some careful consideration shows we're already getting a classic version at Kaffe Stuga, and the potential for more when we visit a Byerly's supermarket.  Reliable source, Davydd, informs me T4&5 is pretty standard fare other than the Hot Dish, and not a particularly unique addition to The Crawl.

I know some folks are more enthusiastic than others about the brewery stop.   My plan for Surly Brewing is to have the beer fans take the one hour tour while the rest of us enjoy the menu in their beer hall.  With a group of our size, reservations are encouraged for both.  So let me know which way you're interested in going: brewery tour, or relaxing in the beer hall for a nosh.

This will happen either Thursday or Friday.  Thursday tours are at 5pm & 7pm.  Friday tours are at 4, 5, 6, & 7pm.  I'm thinking this might be a good way to wrap up the day on either of those days.

If you know of anyone on The Crawl who doesn't check in on the thread regularly, please contact them and let them know we're making some key decisions now and need their information.

Thanks,
Buddy
