For Surly, I'm one of those who does enjoy the beer, but we don't need to do the tour.

Probably the beer tour- however if  everyone chooses the 5pm or later beer tour on  Friday then Its unlikely we will go since we will be heading to the ballgame

As of now, we'll be ending our Thursday run with a stop at Surly.  I've scheduled it for 7pm so anyone who wants to take the tour can do so.  The rest of us will hang in the brewpub.  If you're seriously interested in taking the tour, it's a good idea to make a reservation.  I can do that if there's a group, or if it's just one or two people you can contact them directly.

Admittedly, I did forget about the ballpark faction splitting off on Friday, but I think we'll be okay.  The last scheduled food stop that day is Kramarczuk's at 5:45pm.  Google Maps shows we'll be only 6 minutes away from Target Field, so you should have enough time to grab a bite and still get to the 7:10 game in time for the first pitch.  Worst case scenario is, you're too stuffed for a Twins Dog.

And that's probably a good thing.

EDIT: Just spoke with the folks at Kramaczuk's and explained what was going on.  They say Target Field is walking distance from them, about a mile and half.  Point being, depending on parking availability and meter restrictions, you may not need to move your cars from around Kramarczuk's in order to get to the ballgame.

Final itinerary should be posted within the next 48 hours!

Thanks for checking Buddy.
As much as we love a good walk- I checked- it is only 1.2 miles, I'm not certain how fun it will be to walk back at the end of the game which will probably be at or close to 10:30pm but then again trying to leave downtown if we park closer to the ballpark may not be much more fun.. We'll play it by ear depending how the itinerary looks, BTW we may end up going to Baku on our own on Thursday and skip Surly's- altogether. I'll discuss it with Sandra.

I hate to change course this late in the process, but if enough people are interested, we could still get into Baku Thursday night.  The only reason they were struck from the list was their requirements for a large group.  We could potentially show up as four or five separate tables and get seated that way.  I do not recommend this for Friday or Saturday, as they get crazy busy those nights.

This would effectively move Surly to Friday or Saturday, or eliminate them from the itinerary completely.

Thoughts?

I would LOVE to go to Baku. But unfortunately, I'm tied up with a mandatory event at the University of Minnesota on Thursday night.

I have been to the "real" Baku in Azerbaijan -- it's been several years. Weird, weird city, but great food!

For those of you who have been kind enough to ask, I have a really packed schedule during the Crawl, which has just gotten crazier because the US State Department asked me to go Brazil. The details are still being worked out, but I may need to leave as early as the Saturday of the Crawl.  I'd like to make it to Al's on Friday, which is just off-campus and not too far from my office, but I'll have to see what develops in the next couple of days.

Be VERY careful about parking on the street in Minneapolis. They have just increased the rates, increased the number of spots with 2-hour limits, and extended the active hours for parking enforcement. https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-news/minneapolis-changes-rates-enforcement-hours-time-limits-to-more-than-2600-downtown-parking-meters

I think that's a wonderful idea. I'd be up for it- if everyone else is. Then we can all pretend we don't know each other or act surprised that we all happened to converge on Baku at the same time

Thanks- I actually looked at their website this time, instead of just google maps- Initially I had no idea that they had carry out locations only so I assumed they were all full service.

We want to be aligned with the most direct route to Madison as possible. In fact I'm not entirely happy with Schaumburg- was hoping to clear the Chicagoland Metro area with Elgin since they are on the outskirts....oh well...

If we weren't staying at an Airbnb in Madison, we would definitely go, however based on our timing we may not get into Madison until close to 9pm and that's assuming we leave Detroit before 1pm. Although we have the entire apartment to ourselves (its in a nice old house about a mile walk outside of downtown) and I'm not certain of the check in procedures so in consideration for our hosts, if they want to introduce themselves, I don't want to get to Madison too late.

There was a lot of agonizing over the final version of the itinerary.  Last minute changes were being made right up until I hit the "Submit Post" button.  Brewpubs were dropped, then brought back, and now they're gone again, at least as part of the main itinerary.  in their place, we'll have a fantastic Russian Dinner Thursday night at Restaurant Baku in Plymouth, MN.  They agreed to waive the $40 per person set price and let us order off the menu.

Non-eating options are in flux, with an abbreviated visit to the Como Zoo under consideration for Saturday, as an alternative for the Wabasha Street Caves Tour.  Also, Can-Can Wonderland Mini-Golf becomes an Indpendent Study stop at the end of the day on Saturday.  The managers there estimate it will take up to an hour to play a round of golf.  If we break up into groups of four, allowing for each group to clear the hole before the next group starts, it could be up to a two hour commitment.  We just don't have that kind of time in the middle of prime eating hours.

Also, we still haven't settled yet on a Farewell Brunch spot.  That will likely be decided sometime during the actual Crawl, once we determine how many people will still be in town Sunday morning, and what time they hope to leave.

So, here we go...take a deep breath (I mean me, not you)...no turning back now...this is the (subject to change)---

Minneapolis/St. Paul Crawl, 2019
A quick note on getting around the Mpls/StP metro area.  They’ve got some great roads here.  A huge interstate ring around both cities (I-494/694), plus I-94 running east to west and I-35 taking you north/south.  An important tip about I-35; it splits into two separate highways up north, with I-35E passing through St. Paul and I-35W going through Minneapolis, then rejoins south of the cities.  This is an important distinction as you make your way around town.
I’ll comment on some of the restaurants where necessary.  Other than that, assume it’s all good and order freely.

Thursday, April 25th
8:00am French Meadow Central Mpls
2610 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, (612) 870-7855

9:30am Mill Ruins Park
102 Portland Ave S, Minneapolis, (612) 313-7793
A quick break from eating.  Enjoy the views of the Mpls skyline and Mississippi River.  Use the parking lot for the Stone Arch Bridge on West River Parkway.  There’s also street parking on 1st St. S and S 5th Ave.

11 am  Matt’s Bar S/C Mpls
3500 Cedar Ave, Minneapolis, (612) 722-7072
We’re here for the Jucy Lucy, MSP’s famous outside in CheeseBurger.  Don’t waste precious belly space on the Fries, they’re just the frozen variety, fresh off the back of the Sysco truck.

1:00pm Carol’s Restaurant Far N of Mpls
11888 Aberdeen St NE, Blaine, (763) 757-9700
Good hearty Minnesota Fare.  Breads are baked in house and everything is prepared from scratch.

2:45pm Tavern on Grand Central StP
656 Grand Ave, St Paul, (651) 228-9030
ToG is famous for their Walleye.  Like Matt’s, consider your caloric intake wisely.  There’s a lot of stuff on the menu, but we’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so best bet is to focus on the Walleye Sandwich and the Chicken Wild Rice Soup.

4:15pm Midtown Global Market S/E Mpls
920 E Lake St., Minneapolis, (612) 872-4041
We’re here for the many prepared food stalls representing MSP’s new immigrants.  Wander around a bit and check out what everyone has to offer before settling on what to order.

5:45pm Milkjam Creamery S/C Mpls
2743 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, (612) 424-4668

7pm Restaurant Baku W of Mpls
16 Nathan Ln N, Plymouth, (612) 221-6837
Outstanding Russian (and environs) food!  We shared a meal here with Roadfooder Davydd and wife Nancy back in 2010 and fell in love (with the food).  I’m hoping you’ll all have the same experience.

Friday, April 26th
8:00am Hell's Kitchen Central Mpls
80 S 9th St, Minneapolis, (612) 332-4700

9:30am Patisserie 46 S/W Mpls
4552 Grand Ave S, Minneapolis, (612) 354-3257

10:30am Karmel Square Mall S/W Mpls
2936-2944 Pillsbury Ave S, Minneapolis
Another international market, this one focusing on the food of MSP’s surging Somali population.  I’m making a beeline for the Camel Burger concession.  No joke.

Noon Wally's Roast Beef S of Mpls
8120 Penn Ave S, Bloomington, (952) 884-4349
It’s all in the name. There’s a full fast food menu, but we’re here for only one thing, Roast Beef Sandwiches the way Arby’s wishes they could do ‘em!  Fries look like the real deal, but the Mashed Potatoes look better.  Either way, you gotta ask yourself, do I want them spuds taking up space that could be better used for the Blueberry Pancakes at Al’s Diner?

1:45pm Al's Dinkytown Diner N/C Mpls
413 14th Ave SE, Minneapolis, (612) 331-9991
Private party time!!!  Al’s is turning over the room to us for the low, low fee of $200, plus food and gratuity, to be split between the entire group.  I’m estimating it’ll cost about $20 per person, but we’ve still got a few open seats to help further defer the costs.  BTW, we're allowed to bring in Adult Beverages!  Not sure what kind of wine you serve with Blueberry Pancakes, but maybe a bottle of Jameson to add some "Irish" to the coffee...

3:15pm Magnolias Restaurant N/E StP
1081 Payne Ave, St Paul, (651) 774-3333
Magnolias is best known for their Fried Chicken Dinners, but the Walleye could be the sleeper discovery of this year’s Crawl.

4:45pm Pumphouse Creamery S/E Mpls
4754 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, (612) 825-2021

5:30pm Kramarczuk's N/E Mpls
215 E Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, (612) 379-3018
OMG, it’s all sooooo good!  Grab a Sampler Platter and maybe a bowl of Goulascz to share with the table and you’ll walk out smiling.

7:00pm Can-Can Wonderland N/W StP
755 Prior Ave N #004, St Paul, (651) 925-2261

Saturday April 27th
8:00am Keys Café N/E StP
767 Raymond Ave, St Paul, (651) 646-5756

9:15am Cafe Latte / Bread + Chocolate S/W StP
850 Grand Ave, St Paul, (651) 224-5687 / 867 Grand Ave, St Paul, (651) 228-1017
A two for one stop.  These places are across the street from each other, so park once, satisfy your sweet tooth twice.  Both places are on ChiTownDiner’s and buffetbuster’s “Must Do” list, so they’ve gotta be good!

10:15 am  Wabasha Street Caves Tour S/C StP
215 Wabasha St S, Saint Paul, (651) 224-1191
Admission is $9 per person, cash only.
OR
Como Park Zoo NW StP
1225 Estabrook Dr, St Paul, (651) 487-8200

11:45am Hmongtown Marketplace C StP
217 Como Ave, St Paul, (651) 487-3700
The center of MSP’s Hmong community.  Lots of delicious Southeast Asian Cuisine served Roadfood style from family run stalls.

2:00pm Kaffe Stuga Far N, StP
43821 Forest Blvd, Harris, (651) 674-9958
Minnesota Heritage food at its best, according to wanderingjew.  The folks at this tiny rural gem are creating a special menu for us featuring Scandinavian favorites.

3:45pm Byerly’s
4630 Centerville Rd, White Bear Lake, (651-653-0000
MSP’s preeminent grocery chain.  These are high class stores featuring a wide selection of local products along with a tasty selection of prepared foods.  Even if you don’t buy anything, Byerly’s is a great place to explore.

5:00pm Mac's Fish & Chips N/W Stp
1330 Larpenteur Ave W, St Paul, (651) 489-5299
My personal pick; a down and dirty Fried Fish Joint (or at least as “down and dirty” as you’re gonna find in MSP) with no indoor seating.  I’ll be sure to pack my special Roadfood Crawl Table and Extension Legs so we can relive the magic of Alabama Fish Bar in Cincinnati.

6:45pm Lion’s Tap SW of Mpls
16180 Flying Cloud Dr, Eden Prairie, (952) 934-5299
Thoroughly vetted by numerous Roadfooders, both local and out of towners.  Lion’s Tap serves on of the best non-Jucy Lucy Burgers in town.  Nothing fancy here.  It looks more like a VFW hall than a restaurant, but sometimes that’s where you get the best stuff.

Saint Dinette 261 5th St E, St Paul, (651) 800-1415 Open til 10pm Th, 11pm Fri & Sat
Upscale bar serving upscale eats.  Looks like they’re having an unofficial Burger War with Parlour Bar.

Parlour Bar 730 Washington Ave N. Minneapolis, (612) 354-3135 Open til midnight

Casper & Runyon’s Nook 492 Hamline Ave S, St Paul, (651) 698-4347 Open til 1am Th, 2am Fri & Sat
One of the best versions of the Jucy Lucy, served in a classic old school Irish Bar.  Sadly, too small for the whole group, so check ‘em out on your own.

Blue Door Pub
1811 Selby Ave., Saint Paul, (651) 493-1865 Open til 1am
3448 42nd Ave S, Minneapolis, (612) 315-2470 Open til 11pm

AND

High quality Ice Cream, unique flavors

Mickey’s Diner 36 7th St W, St Paul, (651) 222-5633 Open 24/7
The picture-perfect Diner.  Unfortunately, the food ain’t as good as the view.  Come after dark and grab a few photos, then go get something to eat elsewhere.

Surly Brewing 520 Malcolm Ave SE, Minneapolis, (763) 999-4040
MSP's Craft Brewing scene is thriving, and the Big Dog in town appears to be Surly.  They offer tours on Thursday at 5 and 7pm, Friday at 4, 5, 6, & 7pm, and hourly on Saturday from noon to 5pm.  The Brewpub is open til 11pm on Thursday, and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Woof..feeling a bit dizzy.  That was an ordeal.  I'm sure if there are any mistakes, someone will let me know.

Thanks for reading!

This looks so great. I'm sure you'll all have a great time. Sorry I won't be able to join you. If anyone wants to join me in Savannah/Charleston the last week of May, I'll be there.
