Most $ you've paid for hamburger meat?

I was at the NJ shore last week, and went to a well known butcher nearby-asked for about a pound and a half of ground beef.  It gets rung up-$15.75!  I mentioned that it was the most I've ever paid for ground beef and it turns out they sold several different types, and this was their organic, grass fed and finished beef.  They did offer to put it back in the case, but I just wanted to get the hell out of there.  It was pretty flavorless and dry, it'd would've been better to buy Shop Rite 80% chuck.  It does get more bizarre-the store owner followed me out to my car to harangue me, because he thought I was rude to the 16 year old who rang up my purchase, and he had to 'educate me' about dealing with staff and that his $11/lb grass fed beef was underpriced!

My physician would not be happy if I looked at the price label on the butcher-wrapped ground meat my wife brings home from Whole Foods.

I wouldn't have bought it. That's too rich for my blood, for hamburger. I'm with you, I would have preferred some 80/20 chuck.

For burgers I get 80/20 ground chuck. To be honest I can't recall noting the price.

"Grass-fed" is the marketing buzz du jour.   It was not that long ago that the marketing buzz was,  "100% corn-fed Midwest beef."

In a butcher shop near Lincoln park in Chicago I decided to get the special butcher's blend ground beef.  It was some kind of blend of like chuck, brisket, and short rib.  The price was $6 and change which I didn't think was too bad.  It was only after he had already weighed it and handed it to me that I realized that was the price per HALF pound.  Kind of annoying but at least in this case it they turned out to be some of the best burgers I've ever made.

I refuse to buy ground beef at Kroger any more as it is just grease and no flavor.  I get it at a local store, Weiland's, for about $5 a pound.

Be glad you don't (choose to) shop at a Kosher butcher.

What is the name of the butcher? The pricing is a live & learn situation, but the parking lot confrontation is unforgivable.

We raise our cows on pasture and finish with corn. That gives me the marbling I want in my steaks. The first and last time I had grass feed beef was just recently in Ireland. I ordered a burger and it was dry and heck. I took one bite and gave it back to the kitchen. My wife gave me half of the grilled chicken sand she ordered.

Top steakhouses used to advertise "100% corn-fed Midwest beef."  I just checked a couple websites and it looks like they removed that and replaced it with just "All Prime Grade."   I doubt it would be possible to produce Prime grade beef with grass fed.

The other current meat marketing buzz is "Angus beef."

When we lived in Florida (circa 1990) almost all beef was local grass fed...it was grey and flavorless...I don't get it. No Thanks!

Arctic Butcher in Point Pleasant, NJ.  It was ok, but I'm much happier with the burgers I make when I buy and grind my own chuck blend.  It wasn't nearly as good as LaFrieda, which I'm not super crazy about either.

There was a market I shopped around here and they jacked the ground beef prices beyond belief because of the organic thing. They used to make a half bacon-half beef combo that was about $5 a pound, but the proprietor had inherited that and continued making it.

They stopped selling it at that price and they're no longer around. Surprise, surprise.

I am pleased to share my favorite spot to grab a bite of good food. Burgers are very good and juicy. Everything just taste so fresh.
