For me it's a tossup between Waffle House, White Castle and McDonald's. On the other hand, the coffee at home made with beans from Costco could be the best of all.

And Papa John's, Domino's and Pizza Hut have the best New Haven style Apizza. No one does any better

I'm pretty sure most coffee Michael drinks is Columbian to some extent.

Can't we grow coffee in the USA
so you guys can salute while you sip? Maybe Trump can invade Cuba and make it a state.

While I'm sure that's a real possibility, he doesn't need to if you just want good coffee.
Not the easiest to find but there is some excellent coffee from Puerto Rico if you want to drink American

I'm pretty sure Hawaiian beats Puerto Rican any day of the week. But there are apparently a few places here in the CONUS where some folks are trying to grow coffee. With our wide variety of climates surely we can find a few acres to grow our own. Of course the prices are phenomenally out of whack with foreign grown coffees.

$50 and $60/lb are too rich for my blood when awesome varieties can be had for much less (Jamaican Blue Mountain runs $30/lb much of the time).

I heard second hand that the avocado growers in California that have groves of trees that are too old to produce quality avocados are going to move to planting coffee bean trees.  I don't know this for fact.  Would be interesting if true.

Apparently, according to one of the articles I posted, you can grow coffee trees under the avocado trees to get that rainforest effect. Nice double use of the land, but they've still got to bring those prices down.

Finally made it there last year !!

Since I've received a recent text or two from Roadfooders asking me for coffeehouse advice...I promise I will update my lists by the end of this month
(closures with the exception of ones I'm already aware of on the secondary list are on your own- you'll just have to check the webs)

In Austin, a city with well over a 100 coffee shops, there is only one king: Once Over Coffee Bar. They also have a roastery called Wild Gift.

I really enjoyed Halycon when I last visited over 6 years ago , so we'll be returning there as we'll be spending a couple of days in Austin on our big trip- I've also been curious about Mozart's Coffee Roasters and Summer Moon- so we'll likely  be checking those two out as well.

First I want to update some closings on the Primary list
My biggest disappointment is The Blind Dog Cafe in Washington DC has closed since the owners wanted to focus on pop up restaurants.
The other closure is St James Espresso in Kirkland WA

The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti MI is now Cross Street Cafe
and Alterra Coffee Roasters , the local Milwaukee coffee chain is now Collectivo Coffee

next I'll update new finds for 2015

Columbus has quite a few good coffee houses these days.  My wife and I try to hit one every Saturday morning.  I saw you liked Cup O' Joe and depending on which location you went to it might have closed.  I think there are still two open.  One is in our neck of the woods and we do hit it every now and then.  Still very good.

Our favorite coffee house is downtown and chances are if you are somewhere else and like the coffee they are probably using their beans.  It's Cafe Brioso at the corner of Gay and High St.  The roastery is not too far from there but that is the original shop.   They also have a very good breakfast biscuit.

The other coffee we really like in town is by One Line.  We usually get it at the Highline coffee house in Worthington which is on the far north side.  It's a tiny shop so it isn't a place to hang out but the coffee is always excellent.

It looks like there are still a few left- I believe I went to the Short North location which appears to still be around- in addition I stopped at Stauf's Coffee Roasters back in 2014 which I understand was the original "Cup O Joe's". We were heading back to Pittsburgh from the Spring Cincinnati crawl and stopped at Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. Since there was a line- I went next door to Stauf's to grab a "cup o joe" since the coffee I had earlier that day was weak and watery and as a result, I was in a daze and had a splitting headache.

We do like Stauf's as well.  It's our first stop when we hit the North Market on a Saturday morning.

The Cup O Joe's we always go to is the one on North High St in Clintonville.  But you are right, the one in the Short North is still alive and well.  My wife and I met for our first date at the Cup O Joe in Lennox shopping center which is one of the ones that closed.

It's always sad when the place you met your significant other at closes. I met my fiancée at an Irish pub called Hanafin's  in New London CT and we discovered that they closed last year. Sadly many Irish Pubs are going out of business - I guess they're considered passé

2016 list complete
New coffeehouses added to the Primary list and supplemental list
Primary list additions as follows:

Speeder and Earls- Burlington VT
Ground Central- New York, NY
Prince Street Cafe- Lancaster PA
Philz Coffee- San Francisco and Surrounding area
Granola's Coffee House- Half Moon Bay CA
also Re added to the Primary List
Coffee Tree Roasters- Pittsburgh PA

Cafe Roma Coffee Roasting in San Francisco has been removed altogether for the following reasons.
When we visited it was nothing like I remembered from 9 years previously, also the location I visited in the North Beach neighborhood had shut it's doors last year- I believe there are two other locations in San Francisco but I had never been to these two locations.
