RE: NEBA ROAST BEEF 2013/10/06 18:42:57 (permalink)
Wow! Neba / Mikes / Carrols!  Talk about  names from the past!  Growing up in Schenectady NY I remember them well and loved the food. There was a Mikes on State street on the eastern edge of Downtown at the corner of the block. In the middle 60's they opened up another Mikes with a Neba store on upper State street near the Crosstown Rt 9.  Big hangout  on Fri /Sat nite with the Muscle Cars of that era! Neba also sold a great drink called a Black Cow which was basically soft vanilla ice cream blended with root beer soda pop. Dee-lish!  After moving away from the north a few years later I was stunned to see a Neba in the Ft Lauderdale / Hollywood area! My heart was racing as  I hurriedly parked my 18 wheeler somewhere and ran over to order a couple sandwiches. This was '77 or '78..  Sadly it was the last time I ever saw one.  The Carrols hamburger joint was on Nott Terrace.  I think the hamburgers back then in the 60's were 15 cents!

What memories..used to vacation several times a year at the castaway resort on 163rd and Collins - frequented the Neba's there. I remember the counter people would say if you want roast beef, you have to say "I want a Neba". They also had ham sandwiches - if you ordered one you had to say "I want a virginia ham". I remember they tasted great!
