Yesterday, the NFL lost a voice of reason, compassion & moderation. RIP Mr. Rooney!

Indeed.
He was a good, honest, straightforward, decent gentleman - very typical of his hometown.
He represented his father, his family, his profession, Pittsburgh, and - as Ambassador to Ireland - the United States so very well.

They'll need to hold his funeral/memorial service in the stadium.
Not a church in town big enough to hold all who will want to pay their respects.

Two days to the Draft! Will Cleveland screw it up AGAIN! Which QB comes off the board first!

(Just a feeling...Pitt QB Nate Peterman could be a player in a few years.)

Do swallows return to Capistrano?
Do bears defecate in the woods?

Cleveland 'wins' the draft only in the movies.

It's hard to imagine how these people who have made BILLIONS building businesses by making sound decisions can screw up something as simple as picking a few players to play a game.

From my favorite sports parody site, the Browns trade the first overall pick.

The Bears trade up to get Trubisky with the second pick?

Edited to correct the spelling of the quarterback from Mentor, Ohio.

The Browns didn't screw it up, but the 49ers first year GM stole the first round.

So Fox's A team gets Romo & their B team get Cutler; how would you rate that draft?

Well, neither one is likely to bring good experience to post season game broadcasts.

No big deal for Cutler. He spent most of his career on the sideline with a headset on anyway!

Romo went to CBS...

After 8 years of playing with often weaker offensive lines and receiving corps in Chicago I'll bet Jay Cutler will appreciate being able to go home in one piece on Sunday nights.  Apparently his contract has a clause that allows him to return to the NFL if he wants but if he doesn't I won't be surprised if in a few years he says he's glad he got out when he did.

Meanwhile, Mike Glennon appears to be the $16mil mentor to Mitch Trubisky...look for Jordan Howard to have 500 touches this year.

Well, we all know that the 'ol Parole Officer doesn't exactly pick 'em for good character.

"Word on the street" here in Dallas is that Elliot is a real a-hole.  In March he was videoed on the street pulling a girl's top down and "honking the horn".
AH - OOGA!!!

Recently, Elliot punched a D.J. in a bar fight.  In both cases Hall of Famer Jones sent in his "Mr. Wolf" to "clean up".  The woman won't press charges and the assault victim can't be found.

Jones' comment: "After you're burned a few times most folk learn not to touch the stove."  Translation:  "Am I going to have to hire two body men for this jerk?"  To be sure, Jerry will whine down the suspension to two games, but the future looks bleak for Elliot.  Dez was just a bit crazy and only needed one body man and some meds.  But this Elliot character is bad to the bone; I have a feeling that they are already making room for him in Huntsville.  Hell, they already have a football field there!

And both antique

and modern equipment:

For what Raymond Chandler called "The Big Sleep"!

The Zeke Elliott "thing" is getting nastier by the minute.

The NFLPA is spreading defamatory rumors about his accuser - bound to force the $40 Million Dollar Man into intransigence.

And D-Magazine is about to publish a 77 page "synopsis" of the Columbus, Ohio police report, complete with photos!

The statue of Robert E. Lee atop Traveler has a better chance of playing the first six games than does Elliott!

Re: NFL Chatter: 2017 Draft through 2018's Super Bowl LII (& Aftermath) 2017/08/22 12:37:14 (permalink)
Oh, my goodness.

Once again, we NFL fans are having our entertainment interrupted by a few (temporary) millionaires acting out personal grievances against our Constitutional Republic.

As hilarious and ironic I find that to be, I am even more entertained by the NFL, led by its $40 MM Man, and the networks straight-faced denials that such "First Amendment-protected protests" are having any effect on ratings.

May I suggest an exercise for them?  Go to YouTube and watch the full coverage of election night 2016 on all the networks: ABC, NBC, CBS, FNC, CNN, and MSNBC.

Only one of the literally 100's of talking heads even mentioned "Russia" (Juan Williams on FNC), but each and every one of them - across the political spectrum - had plenty to say about how "White Males" voted; how they, in fact, had determined the election.

Hmmm ... just who do they think all those pricey, seemingly endless ads for erectile dysfunction remedies are aimed at?  Just who do they think the target market is for all those puerile pitches for beer, soft-drinks, fast-food, and unhealthy snacks?  Hell, even the car and truck ads are written with a subtext of them being either chick-magnets or, yes, somehow being a cure (or palliative) for erectile dysfunction!

Even though my first professional position was, at 20, teaching advertising & marketing at a junior college I am hardly an "expert" at such.  But I will venture my 'amateur opinion' that the prime demographic the NFL is trying to reach is "White Males".  Yes, the same group they pander to with flyovers, Old Glory, tributes to the U.S. Armed Forces, and scantily-clad bimbettes marketed as "cheerleaders".

Just why this painfully obvious fact is seemingly such a mystery to those in the NYC, Silicon Valley, and Bristol, Connecticut "bubbles" is beyond me.  In any case, all those so ensconced will find their insistence on denial to be horribly expensive.  IMHO, it couldn't happen to a more deserving group.

-------------------

BTW:  before anyone throws a (well-intentioned, of course)  "flag" at this post, please note that I have taken no "position" ('political' or otherwise).

I have simply noted an obvious proposition - that any business that tolerates employees (in uniform, during working hours, no less!)who willfully pi$$ off their employer's key demographic does so at extreme financial peril.

Yes, the Bristol Bubble.  What an echo chamber.  Are they not at all self-aware?

This reminds me of the New Yorker critic in the '70's.  "How did Nixon win?  I don't know a single person who voted for him."

--------------------

Actually, on checking, Pauline Kael's full quote was:

I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon.  Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken.  But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.”

I like that one better; it is both a spot-on description of the "bubble" - and a vivid illustration of the utter contempt in which they hold us "others".

The game is a game.  It's entertainment. It sells advertising time.  You throw your politics into it, it's no longer entertaining for me, but irritating.  You just lost your value as an entertainer.  I just switched channels to a 1960s  WWII or western movie.  I'll say this to either side of the aisle.  You're an entertainer.  Understand that and how it affects your paycheck.

I thought this was a story from The Onion, but sadly it is real ...

ESPN has removed one of its contract broadcasters from working a game at my Alma Mater due to his name!

The contract employee in question is an American of Asian ethnicity.  His surname is the one most common both in China and the world:  Lee.

Yes, he has been "pulled" by The Bristol Bubble because it trembled in fear that someone might somehow be "triggered" by having a NCAA Division 1 football game being played in Charlottesville, VA announced by someone named Robert Lee.

What are the odds?

Now that the Lions have made Matt Stafford the highest-paid player in the NFL we have a real statistical oddity.

So, what are the odds that the highest paid players in the NFL, MLB (Clayton Kershaw) and golf (Jordan Speith) were all born and raised within a few miles of one another?

Some entrepreneur should start bottling and selling Highland Park tap water!

Yeah, but they are all getting paid.

Stafford and Kershaw were classmates at Highland Park High School and are still good buddies.  They probably help each other hauling all that cash to the bank!
