NY City's Onion Sauce

Interesting article in today's NY Times about the founder of the Onion Sauce that is available at most of NY City's Pushcarts.
The article makes mention of "legendary Dominick’s truck in Queens". Anybody familiar with that one? I've never heard of it. According to a post I found on Chowhound, it's on the West side of Woodhaven Blvd, next to St. John's Cemetery (approx 67th Ave) in Rego Park, Queens. And it's been there since 1959.

    Great story!
As I read your post, I immediately thought "Oh, yeah, that gloppy stuff!"
and wondered: "Hey is that just a NY thing???"
and read the article and found out yes, it is.
But I have a bone to pick - I have seen Black & White Cookies in other cities, (and countries, including Germany, where it is sold in bakeries as an "American". )
(now also to our onion hot dog sauce on wursts in Germany - well ???)

Does this sauce ever get across the river & end up on a NJ ripper?

The stuff is so nasty..We use to get it for our restaurant; they shipped it in from Marathon along with the hot dogs and the mustard.  The stuff would come in foil packages; Pittsburgher's never fell in love with it at our place.  But, they loved the Sabrette mustard.  The best!  That's what I dislike about Rutt's Hutt...Their yellow salad style mustard with the relish mixed in.  Not for me.

The onion sauce is made with dehydrated onions, which is the first negative as far as I am concerned.  More importantly, it goes bad on you..It sours very easily and so you have to keep it under refrigeration and move it pretty fast.  You'll know when it sours believe me..One whiff is all you need.

Yeah, it is most definitely a NY acquired taste.
