and it was really, really good

Their roast pork is terrific and it is served with broccoli rabe and NOT broccoli!.  You will have to buy some and taste the difference.  It is delicious.

You would actually eat a lobster salad on a roll? You have been gone from Connecticut too long. We're going to have to take away your nutmegs.

Michael, Michael, Michael!!!!!!!! From the menu of Red Hook Lobster Pond.

$24.00
Connecticut Lobster RollServed warm with butter and lemon topped with paprika and scallions.

Oh, that's OK then. The lobster salad on a roll is what's shown in the list. But kill the lemon, the paprika and the scallions. They don't belong on a Connecticut lobster roll. Just hot buttered lobster.

There is a Red Hook truck in DC and we have eaten there many times.  The lobster roll is served only with
hot melted  butter.  They do serve the one with mayonnaise and call it a Maine lobster roll, but I disagree with that name as all of the wonderful lobster rolls that I have eaten in Maine had only melted butter on them

Maybe in Southern Maine...true Down East Lobster Rolls are w/ light mayo.

Don't like lobster roll with mayo.  I like CT-style..........in a grilled bun and sautéed in butter!

#7-I'm sorry, but broccoli should be illegal as a major sandwich ingredient. Fine vegetable, delicious in Chinese food, doesn't belong between bread.

9 deli's- I think they just simply named all the deli's left in NYC (including the boroughs) a population of well over 10 million.

It's grim but real. I think the only one they didn't name was Ben's Best in Rego Park- my only experience there nearly 10 years ago was downright awful.

WJ,
I read an interesting article a few month ago that stated that there were a few over 40 Jewish Delis left in New York City so I did a little research.  Here is a list of those that I came up with....................I have been to two of them.

Lox     (at the Jewish Museum and a wonderful museum to visit)

Fine and Schapiro

Sable's Smoked Fish   (This is the other   one that I have been to......amazingly good sable)

Ben's Deli

Barney Greengrass

Arties

Gottlieb's

Murry's  Sturgeon Shop   (next on my list)

Harry and Ida's

Ben's Kosher Deli

Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop

Ben's Deli

Ben's is a small chain, the original (I think) is Rego Park. I remember it as a kid 55 years ago. The best one at the time in that neighborhood was around the corner on 63rd Drive SW corners at Saunders St. My brother remembers the name, I don't. Thankfully there are still some on Long Island. I used to plan my work day around lunch. The ones I recall are The Woodro in Hewlett, sadly Andel's in Roslyn is closed great lox, Lido in Long Beach, Regal in Plainview, Pastrami n Friends Commack, Kensington in Great Neck, the cavernous King David in Lake Success is now a Bagel Boss. There used to be one on the LIE service road in Fresh Meadows perfect for grabbing a nosh on my way home. That one closed over 10 years ago.

Heck, even in New Haven we had Glick's, White's and Fox's, just to name the three biggest ones. There were several others. And there were three main bagel bakeries, Olmer's, Ticotsky's and Lender's.

Sandra does who went to school at Wellesley- so does her sister and brother and law who are essentially natives

Paulde does, and buffetbuster does when he visits!
The only ones who don't are Ayersian!

As a native New Yorker, who has many connections to hundreds of locals, I just don't knowof any locals that say "hey, lets' go to a deli" back in the 70's and maybe the 80's yes. But not any more. Nowadays it's let's do Thai, Sushi, a burger, even pizza is still popular. I know I'm announcing "the emperor has no clothes" but it's a fact. The only recent surge in interest by locals was the Carnegie and that's only because it was closing after nearly 80 years in business

Well I disagree some parts of the country have have better Thai and Sushi restaurants than others.
You may want Jewish Deli's when visiting NY, so does every other tourist, but you're not "eating like a local"
Same thing here in RI, many tourists reach out for the pizza strips and hot wieners, as a local, I'll stick to a good burger stellar cerviche and some of the best Hmong and Dominican food in the country

Eating like a local? Than perhaps I should point out , when you visit Milwaukee, a good Thai place or sushi place. We eat at iconic places, all the time. As a matter of fact I am going to McBobs on Saturday. I am sure there are lots of different restaurants in NYC these days, but that shouldn't discount the good old time places.  And obviously they are thriving without "tourists". Jakes, Benjis, Milwaukee Brat House, etc wouldn't be surviving otherwise.

In the upper part of the Maine coast (Down East) it is not fish cakes served at Breakfast, it is Fish Hash. Exactly the same as corned beef with leftover fish, cooked in Bacon Fat and Salt Pork. What a memory.

There used to be a restaurant in Old Saybrook, Connecticut called Pat's Kountry Kitchen where they served clam hash. I believe it was even in a Roadfood book at one time.
