Well deserved!  I have only been to Scott's BBQ in Hemingway once and it blew me away.  Cousin Johnny and I are spending a week in South Carolina in September and it will be a must visit.

Under America's Classics category, there is almost always at least one Roadfood restaurant recognized.  This year El Guero Canelo in Tucson was a winner.  Anyone who has ever enjoyed one of their Sonoran dogs knows how special this place is.

Sun Wah BBQ in Chicago got an America’s Classics Award.  I highly recommend it.  The Contingent went there a few years ago- it was a group favorite.  Their roast duck dinner is amazing.

Fat Rice also won in the Great Lakes category
; haven't been there yet.  The Contingent needs to plan an event where it's the only stop because their menu is quite extensive.

Rodney Scott was named for his restaurant in Charleston, not Hemingway. I really liked what I had at the Hemingway restaurant, but I absolutely love the Charleston restaurant.

David-
Thanks for that information.  Then we won't bother to drive up to Hemingway, since we will already be in Charleston.

Cliff, I wouldn't necessarily tell you not to go to Hemingway. It might be interesting to try both in a short time frame. I wonder if Rodney is spending much if any time up there now with the seven days a week operation in Charleston.

Where in South Carolina will you be going? I can't remember if you've been to Jackie Hite's for the Friday pig pickin.

Johnny and I will have a full week and South Carolina isn't that big, so we should be all over the state.

We hit Hite's Bar-B-Que in Columbia last year, but we have never been to Jackie Hite's.  It will be right at the top of the list.

I first heard about Rodney Scott's place on "Man, Fire, Food" on the Travel Channel and I just looked at the lineup for the Big Apple BBQ Block Party here in NYC in June and Rodney Scott will have a tent at the party as well as Skylight Inn from Ayden, NC.  Looking forward to it!

Not quite sure what the award for the American Restaurant entails, but pretty sure it is closed now and just available for private functions.(I think)

Sounds great. I strongly recommend going on Friday. The rest of the buffet is a little limited, although really good, but the pig pickin..........

I’ve never been to Hite’s, and wonder if I will someday. I seem to generally want to go back to places that I’ve really liked over and over.

Which place are you referring to that is closed?  Scott's in Hemingway or Charleston?

Thanks.

I believe this closing is in reference to The American Restaurant in Kansas City, Mo.

The American's transition from a restaurant to a venue happened last year:

Oh, okay.  I was confused thinking that "American Restaurant" was an award category, sort of like "Best Italian Restaurant" or "Best Asian Restauranr", etc.  Thanks for clarifying.
