Nearly Defunct Chain Of Budget Hamburgers: Scottie's

I'm penning a report on the old burger chain Scottie's and wonder if any of y'all have any memories of these restaurants. As near as I can tell there were 11 outlets at the peak of the company and now there are only three: Caryville Tennessee, Etowah Tennessee and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Further confusion is compounded by a similar chain called Scotty's. They are distinctly different enterprises.

It has been a while but I have stopped at Scotties.  As I recall, they sold burgers similar to Krystal but better and more substance.  As I recall, the main reason I stopped was after some type of alcohol consumption?  I believe they were on Clinton hwy.

Here's my field report from Scotties of Knoxville Tennessee. Burgers are .70c http://chowpapi.com/on-the-road-with-rl-reeves-jr-scotties-diner-in-knoxville-tennessee/

Scotties is my kind of place!

It looks like a good rest stop for JRPfeff the next time he drives to or from North Carolina.

SC:  Thanks for the update.  I rarely get to the north end of the county.  I first stopped there when it was Scotties so it had to be before 1978.  I have since stopped there post that time. The burgers were not especially great then but they served the purpose at the time.

Wow.  My dance card's quite full for whenever we next stop in Knoxville/Powell, but we may have to make room for that place.

I don't recall them at all.I do remember when we we going to Maryland  from Alaska and us stopping in Springfield Illinois. We toured   most of the Lincoln sites .There was a place called Scotty's that we got hamburgers at.They're mascot was a scottish girl looking like she was doing a highland dance. But the other one we never visited.
Daddy was going to NSA at Fort Meade and I we also made a side trip to Milwaukee to see relatives. Got to eat lunch in the dining room at Visitation Convent in Elm Grove with  daddy's aunt Sister Generose. It is a retirement home for the School Sisters of Notre Dame  and the food was quite good.

Scottie's on Clinton Highway is two miles from my new home. I am there entirely too often for breakfast. The biscuits and gravy are wonderful and both are made on-site every day.

Heartbreaksoup,
Where else would you recommend to eat in the Powell area? I'm still new enough to have trouble finding different places.
TIA...

Maybe Sundancer can respond to you RKB. He's a long-time Knoxville resident and knows the city like the back of his hand.

Powell, not at all (my daughter has family in that area), but you can look up our map for some nearby suggestions around Knoxville.

We visited Scottie's on Saturday and left impressed.  Those are great little 70 cent burgers.  I felt bad that they serve you a gigantic bowl of very good chili, far more than I was going to eat.  At three dollars, that bucket of chili is a steal.

HBS: was this a Scotties at a freeway exit just north of Knoxville that also had a Shoney's?

I think that is the one in Caryville, TN.

I just looked in at Caryville on Google Maps.  There is indeed a Shoney's and a Scotty's - note the spelling - at that exit.

It is spelled differently, but the lady I talked to said that it was once part of the old chain. I can't personally verify that, as I just moved here. It seems about the same.

Great read Heartbreak. But the one true combination of condiments for burgers is: Mayo, Mustard and Onions (raw never grilled) oh, and tomatoes if they are ripe and in season. Glad you enjoyed Scotties.

I can tell you that they have been there a very long time and they are consistent.  Their burgers remind me very much of Krystal's.  There is nothing like it in that part of town and they are tasty.  I am not sure that I would go out of  the way to get there but if you are there, they are tasty.

We found some good burgers on that trip.  I hope that we'll visit the Scotty's/Scottie's in Etowah pretty soon, too.

Stop the presses!  There's a fourth surviving Scottie's, this one in Pikeville TN.  I hope to visit it in June.

Here's my story about the Pikeville Scottie's.  There's now a fifth as well, but it is a new restaurant and not part of the old chain.
