Neighborhood Activists Would Rather Preserve Tom's Diner Than Let Its Owner Retire

Here's the case of a diner that's been talked about here on RF before, Tom's in Denver. Well, Tom's turning 60 and would like to retire. He has a plan, and offer, to sell the property for $4.8 million to a developer to fund his retirement and as payment for decades of hard work. It's his property, but there are some busybodies who want to steal his property and refuse him the right to do with it as he pleases, by using historic designation status to forbid him from disposing of it. This just stinks. If they want to "preserve" it, then they should hand Tom a check for $4.8 million. I am sure lots of longtime customers would miss Tom's, but he deserves his retirement. And the NIMBY's aren't citing it's reputation as a diner. Just some ludicrous architectural stylings.

He worked hard and should have the right to sell his own property!

Hmmm...I'll bet that at least 2 of the 5 people that started the problem are vegans that've never been inside the diner.
