We ended up going to Hiram's-two plain, one chili, one chili/raw onion, fries, onion rings, one Miller High Life draft, one Heineken, $26.

The difference between, say, Rutt's and Hiram's are that Hiram's are a size bigger, they toast the bun, they use (to me) a superior mustard.  If you love Rutt's relish none of that will matter.  Hiram's does cost more, so the size is reflected in that Rutt's plain dog is $2.20 and Hiram's is $3.00.  I like Hiram's chili more, and you don't have to order it separately to put on like you do at Rutt's.  Rutt's onion rings are better.

Was Charlie's Famous that place close to Rt 22, now a car lot the last I saw? I used to work in Union at a candy factory, right down the street. That's were Smarties are made!

If I'm not mistaken you mean "Charlie's Sons," 410John, which the owner sold to another fellow who ran it as an Italian hot dog place for a while, but then decided to turn it into a used car lot. When the former owner ran it, it was my favorite Italian Hot Dog place. His potatoes were exceptional.

P.S.  I agree with Johnlockedema's comparative analysis of Rutt's and Hiram's, and my hot dog enthusiast pal from California recently corroborated my opinion when he was in NJ for a visit and I took him on a mini tour of 4 of my favorite hot dog joints in NJ.

Yes, that location that is now (Brookdale, Brooklake? autos) was a terrific spot for a snack.
