Can anyone who believes Caruso's policy to be misguided (or horrible, cruel, hateful, unfair, disturbing, discriminatory, unconstitutional, ... or 'whatever') cite any time, occasion, or place that infants and tots ought not be taken by their parents?

"Evening meals taken in a formal, public setting at times past the kid's normal bedtime" is on my list.  For those of you that disagree, just WHAT (if anything) is on your list?

Time to give it a rest. We fully understand your position and don't need you to justify it ad nauseum. Nor should you expect others to justify their position.

And here is why Caruso's did what they did.

Okay, I'll play. My list includes brothels, strip clubs, seedy xxx-rated theaters and dogfights. More as time allows...

I'll only say my parents loved dining out and we always got to go. I was regaled with happy birthday by a inebriated Pat Suzuki on my 5th (?)birthday at a noted supper club.
I ate a whole catfish.
Got to go to Rat Pack nightclubs, diners, and everywhere in between.
A love of food and dining out can be instilled at an early age.

Other places tots and toddlers should not be taken by their parents: Crackhouses, Laotian Opium Dens and many parts of Tijuana.

I would add Chuck E. Cheese to your list.

I had evening performances of Broadway plays in mind, but everything on your list is on mine, too - especially abattoirs.

True story: When we were looking for a lot to build our dream house, we looked at a quaint little mill town called Oella that has one of the busiest beef slaughterhouses on the East coast, JW Treuth Sons. I jokingly asked the long-time lot owner if they ever caught a whiff of the operation and he straight-faced answered that when the Valley Protein truck came to town once a week for the renderings that part of town smelled for the next 24 hours. I still go to Treuth Sons for my fresh meat, but needless to say we looked elsewhere for our dream lot.

My childhood hometown had both a livestock auction and a slaughterhouse; neither smelled very pleasant.  Nor did the metastatic ensilage from the numerous family farms.  As a youngster I got to visit them all in the company of my grandfather, a farm implements dealer.  Whenever I'd complain about any of the sights or smells he'd remind me that I was seeing & smelling money!

I don't know about that. I sort of grew up at my father's slaughterhouse.

Did you arrive over an hour late for those birthday dinners?

Jesus Christ. I'm sorry. I know you couldn't be bothered with having kids so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. You should have left. Or bitched at my wife.

We were never excluded from any restaurant outing as children but my family was not into fancy eating. However my mother would deliver a briefing in the car about what would happen if we acted up, especially if there were dinner guests.

But I understand Caruso's dilemma. Had a date at a tiny tiny Italian restaurant. Super crammed inside. A couple brought their infant and five year old and between the two it was quite a scene.

Your mother had the right idea. That was my parents' approach, too. No matter who's creating the disturbance, I find ruckus in a small crowded place almost unendurable. I think I would have had to leave.

That's right Annie. Back in the day, the top of your ear was pinched as you were lead outside back to the car where possible child abuse took place. You never did THAT again. Today it's "Go play somewhere else Brooks, the adults want to dine in peace".
