How far north? Boone's Long Lake near Traverse City. The Bluebird in Lake Leelanau. Upper Penn., try the brewery at Taquamennon Falls and a pastie most anywhere in the UP.

The Ojibway Hotel in Ste. St. Marie has wonderful whitefish. In addition, you are located right on the locks and the museum there is super. A lot of stuff about the Edmund Fitzgerald that Gordon Lightfood immortilized.

If you're coming to the UP from wisconsin, stop at Micky-Lu's barbecue in marinette wisconsin for their butter burger.

Located on the east side of US-41, at the southern approach to marinette, as you head north towards the UP...

It's a little white building, probably last updated in the fifties..

Many 50, 60, and 70 year old kids still stop here. It's a small family business going on for about 60-70 years.

They've been making burgers on the same black-iron barbecue grill for about the same length of time, using charcoal of course.

They may put on about 10-15 burgers at one time, (most everyone orders doubles) and then the fun begins; flipping burgers in the blazing flare-ups, and toasting a bun, special-made for only their burgers...

I can't understand how come they don't burn their arms...

The final tribute to the flame, is a pattie of butter, and maybe a sheet of cheese... before the burger is wrapped, dripping with butter and cheese, a wet pickle, and maybe some ketchup and mustard for taste, in a single sheet of wax-paper.

No serving plates here either... just the burgers in wax-paper laying flat, on the counter top. They have to be eaten fast, so they don't get cold from the counter top...

Don't ask for french-fries... they don't have them... elect a small bag of Jay's potato chips, better order two, they won't last long, a coke, or a good old-fashinoned chocolate malt (still being made on the venerable 5-spindle, hamilton-beach malt machine), to top off the burgers.

Warning... our family went there one thursday and couldn't sit still... all eyes were burning and tear-filled, no matter... after inquiring... (the help didn't notice our burning eyes) we were told this is the day they chop onions for the burgers....

Whenever we drive through the area, our kids always want to eat at Mickey-Lu's... they're old kids now...

Don's Drive In in Traverse City is not to be missed. It's on the main drag (US 31) as you go into town from the north Burgers, Fries, and shakes and malteds just like the 50's. Sometimes there's a wait, but well worth it.
Also, don't miss Albie's pasties in Grayling. Great car food, hot and buttery and filling!
For a more formal meal, the Embers in Traverse City has a 1 lb. slow cooked, marinated porkchop in the sweetest and tangiest BBQ glaze. Excellent!

I know this is a super old thread, but just for future reference, it's actually Clyde's Drive-In in St. Ignace, not Carl's.  There's a place in St. Louis called Carl's.

    Clyde's looks pretty damn good.
