I need to apologize for the above post about the diner. After speaking with our Japanese host, I learned that it is part of a local chain. I'll move this to the Fastfood & Chains forum when I get a chance (i.e., WHFO).

My work was completed in Muroran today and I took an evening train to Chitose to be near my morning flight. Chitose is much more cosmopolitan than what I've seen so far in Japan. Wall-to-wall chain restaurants and Pachinko parlors between the train station and my hotel.

Anyway, you know me and my love for chains, so I was ready to head out for a much needed meal. With KFC, Royal Host and McDonald's nearby, it was a tough choice. Having no Roadfood book to guide me and being on my own for the first time in Japan, I decided to give IHOS a try. Jammed in next to the Shoe Plaza, this International House of Soba is still an inviting dining venue.

Unlike Muroran, English speakers were expected and they had a menu I could read for a change.

My close friend who frequently travels to Japan raves about noodles with Tempura bits in them. That, and having less than Y1000 left, made my decision easy.

Being a fastfood chain, they obviously offered value meals and an option to supersize your bowl. Due my limited funds, I declined both options. I'm glad that I did. My bowl of Soba with Tempura Bits was huge.

I didn't think I could do it, but I joined the clean plate club tonight.

Sometimes it's worth leaving the book and trying a chain. My Y690 meal at Yoshinoya Chitose was delicious. I'm glad I made this choice.

I learned today that nearly everything I "knew" about samurai sword making was incorrect.

Are you bringing that blade with you for any reason when you head for KC?

I am back home in the U.S.A. now. So far I've eaten Austin-style tacos, a bar burger, Chinese (Szechuan-style) food, and pan-style pizza. An All-American menu if I've ever seen one.

On my last night in Muroran, our Japanese hosts took us out for a traditional Japanese meal, and we were treated to a multi-course tasting menu. We were each served several starters, including this plate of sashimi. It was quite good, and that's real wasabi on the plate.

The main course was this shared meal of pork and tofu cooked in seaweed broth. This one did not click with my tastebuds.

This tempura shrimp and vegetables was good, but didn't have the Americanized dipping sauce I am used to.

The finale was this individual bowl of rice in green tea broth. Besides being scalding hot, the taste for this one didn't work for me either.

After experiencing this traditional Japanese meal and my meal of fastfood chain noodles the next night, I found that the fastfood is much more to my liking.

That, or perhaps to slice up that "tomahawk" steak.

In any case, what an interesting and wonderfully illustrated trip!

Update: My lack of desire for Japanese food was a great jump start to much needed weight loss. I got my alcohol saturated bloated body off a cruise ship on February 4th and by the time I left Japan 20 days later I was down 5 pounds. I've kept it up since getting home and am down another 10 as of today - 4 weeks later. The MyFitnessPal app from Under Armour is my new best friend.

We'll get you back up to fighting weight at this Sunday's Kenosha Crawl.  Couple of Double CheeseBurgers at Interstate Dogs should do the trick.

bb,

You too may come back a lesser man.

Serving sizes are small and it took a while for me too develop a taste for the food. I didn't finish a meal until my final night there.

I've been warned about this and it is a slight concern.  Also, I am apparently spoiled by the fact that we have free refills on beverages in the US.

All I remember about the food in Japan is Lucky Tiger beer and a stupid tattoo that cost $2.50 U.S. to get and $300 to have removed.

The real question is did the tattoo happen before or after he woke up in some motel room in NOLA with a woman that he married the night before but had no recollection!

Before. And it wasn't a motel room. Lesson learned. Never let pals feed you Hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's.

buffetbuster - I was kind of missing the never-ending Japanese noodles, so Bobbi and I made this recipe tonight. Spicy Pork and Kale Soup over Rice Noodles. It is very good, but doesn't taste anything like what I had over there.
