Days 5 thru 8 - Santander (continued)
While I was in meetings, Pie Diva was sleeping in late, then shopping and dining with the wife of one of the other meeting attendees. Our supplier treated us one big night out at a very nice restaurant in Santander, Bogeda del Riojano.

They had a menu planned and all we had to choose was meat or fish for our entrees.

I think this was cured beef and this may be their Russian salad.

Bobbi had the hake. Are we beginning to see a pattern here?

I had the oxtail ravioli, which was incredibly rich. I did lick that bowl.

I think this is flan. Wine was flowing very freely, so my memory of the meal is kind of hazy.

Cortado to end this my meal.

We dined at our hotel restaurant on the final night, but the meals did not compare with our first night there.

One more episode to come.

Superb photos of food and sights Jim.  Thanks for taking us along.  And it is truly amazing that you would run into Mark there.

Spain would be right at the top of my list of countries to visit.

Time to finish up this bad boy*.

Madrid - Days 8 - 9

7PM arrives. We are hungry. The smell from McDonald's actually is smelling pretty good. We walk up the block with the thought that if nothing is open, a Royale with Cheese will be dinner. Tapas bar - No. Tapas bar - No.

Chinese restaurant in Madrid - Oh yeah!

We started with the largest spring rolls we had ever seen and a salad. The Fried Rice with Three Delicious was delicious times 3.

Noodles with Chicken.

Chicken with Lemon. The two chicken dishes were excellent, as good as in the U.S., but somehow different. Look how thin the chicken is between the batter. I really, really liked it this way.

Dinner for two, 19.95 Euro, beverages & desserts included.

We caught our plane in the morning to O'Hare. Iberia Airline's VIP Lounge is off the charts.

* Finish a trip report. What a novel concept.

The next time you go to China, you'll have to seek out a Spanish Restaurant.

Wonderful report. But, ravioli and Chinese food in Spain? Are you familiar with the Roadfood tantrum regarding regionally appropriate foods?

Neither knowing nor caring about the exchange rate, how many real, Toby Keith-approved 'Murican dollars is that?

According to the Google Exchange rate chart, about 22 bucks.  Not bad.

BTW, Toby Keith is paying his bills with Saudi Riyals these days.

That conversion is about right Buddy. Tipping is not expected either. A Euro or two is more than they usually see.

Those beans do look awfully good.  Could you identify enough flavors to attempt them at home?

I found a recipe and attempted to duplicate the beans at home.

Not exactly there, but these are the right idea. I didn't get that rich sauce with these.

Ingredients: 1 TBSP EVOO; 3 oz cured pork product*; 1/2 onion chopped; 2 garlic cloves minced; 14 oz can of Cannellini beans; 1/4 cup white wine; and Herbes de Provence to taste.

Preparation: Cook the cured pork in EVOO to release and evaporate excess moisture, remove from pan. In the same pan saute the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the cooked pork and remaining ingredients and warm through.

The ham was salty enough that no other salt was needed. Next time I will use smaller beans and a different variety of cured pork.

*I used country ham in my preparation because it is readily available everywhere in NC. I have since bought tiny cubes of Pancetta at Trader Joe's for my next batch. Iberian Jamon would be optimal, but I have not stumbled across any here.
