Ok FLORIDA - how about a Roadfood meetup?

UPDATE 1/11/05!!!

Let's get this party started folks...we're looking at late Jan/early Feb for this meetup! Please e-mail me if you think you may be able to make it. RibDog and I are comparing notes to see where the best places would be to meet. Hope to hear from you soon.
-------------------------

Attention Sunshine State folks! Have you read with envy the stories of recent Roadfood meets in New Jersey and other areas and wished that you could convene with people in your neck of the woods?

I sincerely hope there is something left of the Florida panhandle to host a neat get together. Ivan could flatten it if it holds together.

I am ready for whatever is left of St Pete Beach. Cocktails at The Don Cesar and head for Clearwater, hang a right and on to Tampa. Good thinking Kristi. But wait until December please.

Kristi: We'll be in St Pete area from about January 15 'till about February 15.
We'd happily join any other roadfooders in whatever you stir up during that period of time. We're easy to feed and would go for whatever kind of tour you want to put togerher. Or maybe not a tour - just a get -to- gether in some Cuban Sandwich, Grouper sandwich, smoked mullet, or whatever kind of place ...

    Cheers, John

That's the idea John! I do have some places in mind, it'll probably be "whatever..." a mish-mash...but that's more fun! I like everything and I'm sure everyone is open, too!

Hey John you once asked me about that little french restaurant in Gulfport. If I am there in Jan and the town is still there after all the hurricanes it would be a nice place to meet.

I know I'll be there sometime over the winter. I'll be following your plans. I've got lots of Southwest coupons so can come on a moments notice.

A.M. Don't think they could handle too many of us all at once, but I'd think if we were less than a dozen they'd be happy to see us. If your'e down there how about looking into that as a possibility. In any case we intend to go there sometime in our month in the area - somehow we never got inside the place
    in our past visits.

You must mean La Cote Basque. Haven't been there in ages but it's been in the same spotfor about 25 years, so it can't be all that bad! I remember having a good meal there once.

If we decide to center the meet in St Pete, we'll try to include the following so you all can get your Cuban sandwich fix.

    Just an idea!

Oooh, this is going to be fun!!!! Kristi, have you ever been to Back Fin Blue in Gulfport? Awesome crab and corn chowder, and really good fish specials. There are so many great places to choose from! I am excited about meeting some of the roadfoodies, for sure!

Lisa, I was going to suggest Backfin first...thinking about crab cakes...It's a possibility! Anyone can make suggestions for our meet; it's not solely up to me where we go!

I only eat crab cakes when I'm within spitting distance of Chesepeake Bay, and I only eat Grouper when I'm within spitting distance of the Gulf of Mexico.

We'll be following this too - depending on dates we may have a winter Florida trip to plan. My cousin and husband (we're very close) are moving to the Fort Meyers area, if you can believe that after all the hurricanes! They are leaving in October, so we are thinking of visiting possibly in Feb/March. We'll see what happens! Sue

We would love to, but don't think we will be in Florida until March/April. I'll keep watching to see what dates you all decide on.

Am in SW Florida near Ft Myers/Naples. Would love to attend and get a chance to meet some of my cyber foodie pals. Used to live in Tampa before I moved further down the coast.
If you guys go you've got to try the Spanish food for which Tampa is justly famous. Don't waste your time/money on Columbia in Ybor which has become mostly a tourist mecca. For some of the finest Spanish food anywhere in the U.S. you definitely need to check out Cafe Pepe on W. Kennedy Blvd. Not only is the food outstanding, but the staff is professional and knowledgeable. As a bonus they have some of the best Sangria I have ever drunk. I'll keep following this thread w/ great interest. Best regards,
