Nice! I am a big fan, and long time user of Shelby's chili mix. Out of all the brands on the market it is by far my favourite.

I'm a history buff but it had never occurred to me to look into the background of these two who have done so much to forward the cause of civilized society.  Thanks for posting.

But "penetration into hundreds of supermarkets worldwide." - Uh, maybe that should be hundreds of supermarket chains worldwide?  I'd bet there are more than a thousand stores that stock them in Texas.

I first discovered Wick Fowler's in Austin in 68 or 69; probably first heard of Terlingua from the package notes.  Used it for maybe 20 years, sometimes tweaking it to my taste.  I didn't know the company had been in business before the first cookoff.

After I branched out into making my own from scratch, I sampled other mixes to get ideas.  I didn't think Shelby's was as good, but to each his own.  Haven't used either in maybe 20 years other than when making chili for a pot luck or party at somebody else's place or when I don't have the stamina to do much more than dump a mix in the pot, as was true for several pots of chili I made last fall.

“You may suspect by now that the chief ingredients of all chili are fiery envy, scalding jealousy, scorching contempt, and sizzling scorn,” H. Allen Smith.

Mr. Smith apparently believed that chili was invented by a woman.

If y'all are in a reading mood look up some old articles by H. Allen Smith, he was famous in his day and seriously funny.

I read his stuff years ago, and I met him back in the '70s.

You gotta give more details than that? Were you in Brewster County where he built a home?

Nope. I met him in a Japanese restaurant in New York. He was a friend of one of my bosses at The Associated Press who was hosting several AP staffers from around the country, including me.

Not really. We were just talking about stories we'd covered in various places.

That man was so funny. He left a mark on Texas chili. If y'all haven't read his work do a little digging.

I was very into H. Allen Smith in high school.  I'll have to see what I can find.

This puff piece from Ford's racing division circa 1965 shows Shelby to advantage:

There are dozens of good Shelby videos on Youtube. Great watching for race fans on a rainy fall afternoon.
