Parent of Olive Garden Buys Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen

Darden has made a business of wringing every dime out of food prep. I'm not a big fan of Olive Garden, but I have been a few times, and it is not really all that bad. I wouldn't make a scene to talk my party out of going there, and would actually choose it, were I on vacation, without local advice.

I've never been to, or even noticed a Cheddar's, but they seem to have found a niche. I was surprised that Darden would want to buy a chain that requires skilled prep work at each unit. The market does not agree with my opinion, and Darden stock is up.

The Chedders by me is very clean and well run and usually stays very busy. I usually get the Chicken Strip Salad and my parents get the Salmon. It is on the same road as The Olive Garden.

They are retrofitting (I believe) a building here by the mall...near the Red Lobster...across the way from Olive Garden. One was close to us when we lived in W Des Moines...never went....It was just called Cheddars then.

I've never been to one but I do have a coworker who used to go all the time when he lived in a different state and said it was the best of that class of restaurants. I just scrolled through some of the Yelp pics and some of the food looks ok. The thing that really grabbed my attention were the prices. They are pretty darn cheap for both food and drinks. I wonder if that will be the first thing Darden will address.

No the first thing will be to put you on a false wait and have you buy more wine...specialty drinks in this case.

My parents go there for lunch and use their Military discount. It is cheaper than fast food for them.

Never been there.Maybe I'll have to try it some Sunday or Saturday when I get off from TJMAXX for lunch. They i think changed their menu and went to fresher food or something hence the name change. Wonder how this Olive Garden-Cheddar's deal is going to work out.

I believe they've trimmed their menu a good bit when they changed from Cheddar's Casual Café to Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen.

Looks like a standard chain menu with Southern leanings. At least they country fried steak and fried fish.

There's a Cheddars close to me and it seems no better or different than any Applebee's or Chili's.  Its alright, but would never be my first choice.

There used to be at least one Cheddars in Columbus, but they left this market about 15 years ago. Now the closest one is in Mansfield, Ohio, about 50 miles north of here.

There's one down in Florence, KY that's been there for at least ten years and still seems to draw a crowd on Sunday after church.

How long have you been writing Statler Brothers lyrics?

My mom was a huge fan of the Statler Brothers so they probably influence me on some subconscious level   Personally I always preferred Ray Stevens...
