Several years ago I told lleechef that the absolute best fish sandwich I'd ever had was a haddock sandwich at Flanders Fish Market in Connecticut. So she took me to the now-closed Benkovitz Fish Market in Pittsburgh. So much for that haddock sandwich. And then she took me to Wholey's, also in Pittsburgh. Get out! Next was the Back Door Tavern in Fallston, Pennsylvania. Folks, you've never had a fish sandwich till you've had one in Western Pennsylvania.

This is one of the reasons I want to go on this crawl. Lisa has been talking about this for years. I know that gal knows quality, I'm looking forward to it if it happens in June. Joyce is also a fish sandwich nut! I'm also looking forward to the pierogies.

The mention of Penn State's Creamery reminded me of the Rick Sebak ice cream documentary...any locals know him? Maybe he'd join us for the weekend.

As a perk for a WQED donation, we had lunch with Rick Sebak. We're friendly enough that he recognizes us and stops to chat when we encounter him around town - but I suspect that might be more because he is a wonderful friendly guy than because of any special connection we have. But I would invite him.

I haven't been in Primanti's for years when she has been working.  Almost all of my visits are either late at night or early in the morning.  But, what a character she is.  If you are a guy, there is no guarantee that your sandwich will be cut in half.  Depends on what kind of mood she is in.
So let's say that a non-native were to look at this slaw-and-fries-topped sandwich and ask...

"What are you trying to hide?"

I bring this up only because I fear for JRPfeff's safety.

Rick Sebak at WQED-TV has made numerous documentaries on Pittsburgh and food. He would be a great resource.

You don't need a shirt, she can tell just by looking at you. Yinzers have a certain look. 😆

Yinzers:  be nice.

Not everyone gets "Pittsburgh humor" (e.g., 'Pi$$ on you if you can't take a joke').

Fact is, we are the nicest people on the face of the earth.  (Just ask us!)

Example:  in SFO the other night a fan in a Pirates jersey caught a foul, then tossed it to a total stranger for him to give to his little daughter who was wearing a Giants jersey.

Typical Yinzer!

I don't know about that. When we go to PNC Park for a Giants-Pirates game lleechef wears a Pirates jersey, I wear a Giants ball cap and she's not very nice to me when the Pirates win.

Actually, ours turned out o.k.; the STEELERS won that game.
And they went on to punish some team from the West Coast in Super Bowl XL that year.

Re: Pittsburgh Crawl 2015/06/11 14:50:03 (permalink)
My preliminary thoughts on a Pittsburgh crawl:

• Josza's Corner is a primary reason to come. It's an exceptionally Roadfoody place; it's like a family dinner at the home of your Hungarian grandfather.
At first I wasn't sure how distinctive a place it really was, because I deprecate the places I've submitted to Roadfood myself. But if there were a place like Josza's in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati crawl would have taken us there, and if there were a place like that in Chicago, the Chicago crawl would have taken us there - so I conclude that a place like Josza's really is a rarity.
And as buffetbuster mentioned above, Alex is 73 years old and slowing down a bit; that is a reason to do a Pittsburgh crawl soon instead of someday.

• The Strip is an obvious destination for a Pittsburgh crawl. Pittsburgh has a Roadfood characteristic that not every city has: a plurality of Pittsburgh's Roadfood restaurants are in a a stretch of a few blocks of the Strip.
The challenge of the Strip, though, is that many of the places wouldn't easily handle a large group. Those who know Enrico Biscotti, for example, will agree that fitting 30 people in would
My idea to handle that is to divide into smaller groups to explore the Strip, sharing recommendations and plaudits and pictures with cell phones (with GroupMe or another solution), and converging from time to time on a few larger group activities.

• From the illustrious work of previous crawl leaders, I've learned that I prefer to break up the food stops with some non-food activities. Lori has already mentioned the Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh, and those are a very nice expression of Pittsburgh's ethnic heritage.
Two other activities I would consider for a Pittsburgh crawl:
- The distillery tour of Wigle Whiskey in the Strip combines the history of the Whiskey Rebellion with the process of making whiskey and includes whiskey tastings.
- If we could arrange it, I'd love to get a tour of Parma Sausage, which makes traditional Italian sausages and hams.

All excellent ideas, Ralph!!  I agree that we'll have to break up into smaller groups in the Strip.  I also like the idea of visiting some historical places while we're there.

Dang!  I wish it wasn't a year away!!!

Good stuff Ralph!  As a teetotaler, I would have never thought of the tour of Wigle Whiskey, but it sounds like a great idea.  And, no doubt the only way for us to visit some of the places in The Strip is to split up, unfortunately.

Just a few pictures taken at the Strip to get you all prepared for what's coming on the Pittsburgh Crawl.

Olives, anyone?

How about cheese?

Fish?

Or just a fish sandwich?  (It's a small.)

Just a couple of great places in the great City of Pittsburgh!!!
