Quick Weekend Trip to Quad Cities - Sept. 22-23

Hi guys,

Just want to let you all know I will be in the quad cities Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.  I plan on having dinner at Frank's Pizza in Silvis, IL and then Whitey's ice cream for dessert Saturday night.

On Sunday, I will be meeting up with Sandra and Dale (as they travel across America).  We plan on having lunch at the Machine Shed and also visiting the John Deere Pavilion and the Mississippi River Visitors Center.  I will be having coffee early Sunday at Milltown Coffee in Moline.

If anyone wants to join us, please let me know!  Take care.

I think so.  Although I wish he would talk about the trip more.

This coming Saturday is a definite possibility for me as Mrs. C has suggested I take a road trip because we're dogsitting, so some QC pizza (try to work Harris Pizza into the mix) would be good.  And if I'm going I think I'll start with a lunch of broasted chicken at Mulkey's.

Brad, that would be great.  We can definitely do Harris Pizza instead of Frank's (or both if we have the stomach space).  I have three pizza places on my list: Frank's, Harris, and Fat Boy's, so if we hit any of those I will be happy.  Keep me posted on your availability.

Oooh, I like this thread.  Frank's, Harris, and Fat Boy's are among the definitive spots for QC pizza in my opinion (Stashu's over in Moline is another good contender).  Just remember: sausage is a required topping!

Ketteract,

Great looking photos!  I always say yes to sausage on my pizzas.

Brad,

Danny's Pizza is a strong possibility.  Reviews are good.

Although I'm working this weekend and can't join you, I'll put in a good word for Harris Pizza.  We ate there last fall and really enjoyed it.  If you can, try to get a view of the kitchen when they're cutting a pie using the giant shears.  Be sure to take a picture of it and post it somewhere else.

Danny Boy's Pizza looks like it has possibilities, even if they do include sauerkraut as one their pizza toppings.

While you're in town, maybe take one for the team and check out Jim's Rib Haven in Rock Island.  They used to be a favorite spot of ours whenever we'd pass through town.  Last couple visits were less than stellar, but might have been an anomaly.  If they're having a good day, the ribs are excellent, the fresh cut fries are top notch, and the beans and potato salad are fantastic.  Yeah, I know, two potatoes in one meal.  That's why you go with another Roadfooder and share.

Have a great trip!

CB, put together an itinerary based on what works for you, as it seems like you may have some non-food reasons for visiting the QC.

Based on the places mentioned so far, Fat Boys is kind of the odd one out since it's on the Iowa side of the river.  Otherwise Jim's, Mulkey's, Harris, and Frank's are all in a fairly straight line on the Illinois side.  I see myself heading west across southern WI and then south on IL-84 along the river, hopefully finding an interesting place or 2 along the way.

Good call on Mulkeys . Very good broasted chicken spot.

I like Harris and Franks, but prefer Franks pizza for sure.

If I recall you get around for fried chicken. Check out Alexander Park Tavern in Princeton your next trip through the Illinois River valley. Right up there with other area favorites - Rips and Sip n Snack.

Thanks, KC.  Princeton is a bit out of the way for this trip but not so far as to rule it out completely, so I guess I'll see what Saturday brings.

For sure. I don’t come on and post much so I figured I drop that chicken knowledge here since I know you are a regulars traveler on the I 39 corridor.

You should post more often.  You know your stuff and can make some valuable contributions.  Also, you should think about coming up for some of our Contingent events.  We'd be happy to have you join the group.

CB15 and I have been discussing the itinerary and it looks like we're fairly settled on Frank's and Harris for pizza, Mulkey's for some broasted chicken, and Jim's Rib Haven for barbecue.  Depending on time (this is a day trip for me and I'll probably be spending at least 6 hours on the road) there may be a Lagomarcino's visit as well, but nothing's set in stone yet.

If I have enough time to take I-80 home I may also hit KingCrab's recommendations of Alexander Park Tavern in Princeton and/or Sip-N-Snack in Mendota.  And if I decide I need to take the faster I-88 route there's BBY Carryout in Dixon.

Hello,

Just a further update.  The first meal for Brad and myself will be at Jim's Rib Haven at 11AM this Saturday.  All are welcome to join us.  I will post the final itinerary tonight.

CB15 and I enjoyed the four stops very much.  Despite some ominous warnings both here and online in general, Jim's Rib Haven was just fine and the spareribs were very good.  Harris and Frank's both serve QC-style pizza but there are definitely differences between them, as the Harris pizza seemed to have more cheese and the Frank's pizza more sausage.  But both are excellent.  And the long drive would've been nearly worth it just for the broasted chicken at Mulkey's alone.

Mine was more of a caveat, or a full disclosure, rather than a warning.  I just wanted you to be aware of Jim's occasional quality fluctuations so no one would come back and say, "That SOB BuddyRoadhouse sent us to the worst 'Que Joint in the Quad Cities."  This way you made a decision knowing full well what to expect.  Happily, it turned out pretty good.  Glad you enjoyed it.  Fries or Potato Salad?  Or both?

#1, the larch...errr, Jim's Rib Haven.  Good ribs and sides, and the hot/spicy barbecue sauce had a building heat.

From Jim's it was on to the original location of Harris Pizza.  If I owned the house next door (or just one within walking distance) I'd be eating a lot of pizza.  A lot.

QC pizza has some of the best crust I've ever tasted.

You can always count on EmilyPost15 to set a good example.

Mulkey's, where they have both a dining room and a coffee shop!

Vintage.

Mulkey's version of French onion soup and it was by far the most unique I've ever had.  The broth was either a very light beef or possibly chicken and there was a definite flavor of what I think might've been allspice, so needless to say it caught me completely by surprise.  Since I associate BFO with a dark beef broth I had trouble warming up to it.

Not mine.  Not then, not now, not ever.

Outstanding broasted chicken and I even had my choice of chicken or brown gravy for the potatoes.

This is the sign on the 14th Ave. (north) side of the building.  Mulkey's uses the Henny Penny system while other restaurants use the Broaster system.

By this time we were starting to feel pretty full but we pressed on to our final stop of the day, Frank's.

At Frank's the small pizza comes cut in wedges, not in the strips so closely associated with QC pizza.  Fortunately the flavor and texture aren't affected.

I took a lot of pizza home with me (thanks, CB) and as a testament to its unique style of sausage, Mrs. C at first thought it was hamburger.

Brad,

Thank you again for the making the day trip to the Quad Cities to meetup with me.  It is always more fun with two people.

I think the Quad Cities definitely require further exploration.  We drove by lots of places that had a Roadfood vibe to them.

Plus I-80 eastbound to the QC runs right through LaSalle-Peru and IRVFC country (see KingCrab's recommendations above).  There's some real potential here, maybe even enough for a weekend.  Westbound on Saturday and eastbound on Sunday, and if anybody has access to a tractor-trailer rig we can bootleg 400 cases of Coors as well.

But can we find someone with a Trans Am?
