Recurring Event - THE Contingent

So I got retired last month. Not by choice, but watcha gonna do? I had planned to work another six years, but took a hard look at my retirement portfolio and figured this just might work. I am currently 59, so this is almost as good as being a school teacher or government employee.

Today I had a crazy idea, We've subscribed to Bon Appetit since 1981 and also have many prior issues from my Mother. In retirement, Pie Diva and I will cook a meal from every issue that we have in the basement. I did some math, if we cook one meal per week, it will take 10 years to get through them all.

Here's where you come in my Roadfooder friends. Once each month we will host a dinner party featuring a menu from a BA for that month in our collection. Next month will be the March 1985 BA, and we'll serve a heritage Czechoslovakian menu. Buddy Roadhouse and Quijote and their spouses have stepped up to be our first Guinea Pigs.

If you are brave enough, pick a month to join us. We are starting small, 4 guests, but may bump the numbers with time.

Frankly, I think half the fun will be in the actual cooking.  Maybe consider starting the party a few hours earlier and include your guests in the prep process.

If you are ever in the area...

It is really exciting. Bobbi and I LOVE to cook together (it was our first date) and have not had much time over the last 15 years since I was working on the road. It is such a relief to be home.

This was dessert last night (and tonight). Two strawberries we purchased, and the rest from the pantry and freezer. We'll eat okay without going out much.

So I got retired last month. Not by choice, but watcha gonna do?

1. Work at Glenn's in Watertown.
2. Work at Williams-Sonoma in Mayfair Mall.
3. Volunteer for Paul Soglin's gubernatorial campaign.

You're perfect for all 3.

Bon Appetit?  You couldn't've subscribed to Texas Monthly, Southern Living, or even the monthly newsletters from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and the Iowa Pork Producers Association?

I'll put you down for "I'm washing my hair." More days available for ChiBears15, I guess.

Congratulations on your retirement. And congratulations on having a plan and something to do in your retirement. I’m finish up my 44th season with the CSO and have now officially moved into the number five spot in seniority with one of my colleagues playing his last concert on the last day of our East Coast Tour that ended last night in Chapel Hill. I don’t have a conception of what I will, or would want to do in retirement. I probably have a few more seasons left in me, but you never know when the coordination and stamina, and necessary skills will start to abandon you.

Best of luck. I know that you and Bobbi will have a great time with your various projects.

Sorry about the unexpected life change, but it sounds like you're making the best of the situation.  Let me know when my name comes up in the guest list lottery!  I'm putting dibs now on the meal with the curry butterscotch pie- the January 2013 issue, apparently.  See you in 7 or 8 years!

Lucy,

Pick a month. Bring your friends. First dibs gets it.

April's menu is still up in the air (there may be beef filets involved). May will definitely have a British theme, following our 2 weeks over there.

Thank you David.

Although I really enjoyed my job, the stress of constantly being away from home was eating at me. I really didn't understand this until the feeling of relief I got when I finally returned home.

Bobbi and I would love to prepare and share a special meal for you sometime. Pick a month and you'll be invited.

Will this be superceding Smoke Day, at least for this year?

Do we want to have a Contingent Pseudo-Smoke Day get together at some BBQ joint in the Illiconsin area?
Gyp noticed a new location for Mister Bar-B-Cue's grease truck that looks like it has plenty of room for tables , chairs and B-B-Q lovers. https://onmilwaukee.com/dining/articles/mister-bar-b-que-west-allis.html

MFL - Sometime in early March Bobbi & I want to tag along with you and Beth to your cheap Burek and other treats.

SC - Since every weekend is now a 7-day weekend, I think we'll have a Smoke Day event later in the Summer.

SC - Labor Day weekend is still on for our Heritage Eurofood Potluck.

MFL & Beth - When are you coming over for a dinner party? April or May?

I'm game, especially if we add Neighbor's Inn on Becher to the mix.  I've heard they have pretty good fried chicken.

We had some mushrooms in the fridge and a piece of beef tenderloin in the freezer - Beef Stroganoff was an obvious choice. I mostly followed the recipe in the March 2010 Bon Appetit and it was stellar. I usually don't think of paprika as packing any heat, but a little Penzey's Half-Sharp Hungarian really punched this up.

Sunday is our first edition of the Bon Appetit Supper Club. We are trying to put the house back together in time for Buddy and Quixote and their spouses.
