What a great story. Never was a fan of Long John's, but I must admit to liking Captain D's (founded the same year as Long John Silvers, but in Tennessee). Wonder what it was about those two states that resulted in the founding of two fish restaurant chains like that?

Captain D's made the grievous error of instituting an 'all you can eat' option near the college I attended in Alabama. We'd roll in there every Friday night. It's crazy how much fried fish a pack of 18 year old boys can put down.

Did all that fried fish come in handy for soaking up a Friday night's worth of college-budget beer?
On my recent trip through parts of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio I didn't see very many LJS's, and 2 of them looked to have been closed for quite some time.

    Captain D's was a Shoney's concoction.

I liked Arthur Treacher's,  but LJS has better hush puppies.

Many Nathan's places also sell Arthur Treacher's , which was bought out by Nathan's. Everytime we go to our Mall we stop there. Love the Hushpuppies, and fish& chips. Yes, they're still around!

When it comes to fish and chips joints my heart belongs to H. Salt Fish and Chips. I sorely miss their fish and chips. They were heads and shoulders above the competition.

Warren Rosenthal studied H Salt's when he was developing Silver's.

Yeah but I'll bet there are some great mom n pops that make for good substitutes.

Not too many mom N pops making hushpuppies in New Jersey. One thing I like about Arthur Treachers is I can get Hushpuppies right here at our local mall. They may not be perfect, but they're ok.

They are still in the San Antonio area, but most of them are paired up with A&W  Hamburgers.

Hey Holly, watch out for Mike Sutter, the new writer for SA Express, he's an old school hound and will be doing some good digging in those parts.

They are pushing the CHEAP ($1.99, I think) little fish meal on national TV, but so far as I know, there are few if any LJS in my area. I wonder what kind of fish can be served at that price???, maybe a 3 oz portion of Talipia?? Oh,,,,,,, maybe it is a 4 oz portion of fresh haddock being served as a "loss leader", but I don't think so........
