Riefe's Restaurant in the Quad Cities is closing

Sadly, I just found out over the weekend that a Quad Cities institution  is closing after nearly 70 years of business. Riefe's Restauarnt truly deserved a review on Roadfood and I had every intention of writing it up this restaurant that serves superb midwestern comfort food and pies that would make  buffetbuster blush. When I visited on Saturday (the second time in 2 1/2 months) my waitress had mentioned to several patrons that Riefe's will be closing at the end of the year. The owners of this family business have decided to retire and no one in the family wants to take it over. This seems to be very commonplace nowadays. There has been speculation as to what will become of the restaurant. Hopefully we'll hear some good news.

So this is your plan?  Post and text me photos of beautiful pies from a place I have never been and then immediately announce that they are closing?  You are a cruel, heartless man!

Sorry to hear of the closing.

My favorite Iowa pork chop was a smoked one I had at breakfast here.
I guess I'll have to eat a "mountain" at  Ross's   in Bettendorf for breakfast now.

Thank goodness I'm coming back for Thanksgiving in a couple of weeks. I'll make sure to hit Riefe's.

Hopefully someone will be able to post a photo of the last day, when all the unsold pies are being tossed into a dumpster!

Riefe's has been on my "if I get the chance to stop" list for a couple of years but I've yet to visit.  Ketteract, if you'd like some company for your Thanksgiving weekend meal I might be able to join you.

The closing of Burt's Place and the impending closing of Riefe's are reminders that we shouldn't take anything for granted and there might not always be that "next time".

That was a helluva chop I had, that's what I had on my first visit 5 years ago.. It wasn't an "Iowa Chop" by definition (in terms of size and thickness) but if they were out of the pork shank and kraut special when I visited this past Saturday, I would have gotten that smoked chop!

Here's an article in the Quad City Times about their impending closing

Since my Thanksgiving QC plans fell through I'm now targeting Dec. 23 for a visit to Riefe's.  As that's the last day of operation hopefully the menu will still be fairly complete, but I could probably go this Saturday instead.

About a week and a half ago the Des Moines Register ran this story about Riefe's.

Some beautiful photos in that article. This seems like an appropriate thread in which to repost my own, taken during this year's Thanksgiving visit to the QC.

I only wish I'd been able to eat in, but I'd promised to bring some to a friend in Iowa City.

Doesn't look like I'll be making it back for Christmas, so I'm glad I went when I did.

I drove by Riefe's yesterday and it looked like organized chaos.  People were lined up out the door and the parking lot was full (with several employees directing traffic) so I decided to move along.  Oh well, it's not the first closing/closed Roadfood restaurant I've missed out on!

Of course, since I was already in the Quad Cities I found another longtime place to eat...more to come later.

I'd actually been thinking about going last Saturday but held off until yesterday because of the possibility that my wife would've been able to join me.  Unfortunately she wasn't so in hindsight I could've gone 5 days ago...serves me right for trying to be nice!

363.1 miles round trip for 1 meal.  I think that's a new personal best.

Mine is 1,265 miles. That was from Gahanna to New Haven and back for a plain apizza and a birch beer at Pepe's.

Cars were lined up to get into Riefe's parking lot:

And customers were lined up to get into the restaurant:

The Quad-City Times had several articles about the last day and this is one of them.  Instead of selling food as usual the Riefes essentially gave it away as customer payments were donated to charity...very cool!

Well sometimes you hope for the best and expect the worst... And that's exactly what happened.
It would have been nice if another family restaurant opened serving hearty Midwestern fare, but of course not...
Looks like they'll be serving sushi and hibachi at the former Riefe's Restaurant.

Davenport has a Thai restaurant, Exotic Thai, that shocked me by offering a few items not even seen in Chicago.
Ross Restaurant, a 24/7 place offers up the Mountain, which is a depression era invention. It's somewhat similar to downstate Illinois's Horseshoe. With Riefe's gone, it's either Ross or Machine Shed which btw was excellent but DO NOT DRINK THE COFFEE. I so looked forward to a smoked pork chop with my eggs for breakfast at Riefe's.

I couldn't tell you when I'll be back in the Quad Cities. Honestly it could be "never" but it would have been nice to to know that there's a place like Riefe's that could have been there for me if and when I should ever return.
