Nice report!   It appears that some of the closings were because it was around New Year Day.   Perfectly understandable, especially in small restaurants that do tend to close around Holidays.
By the way, doo you still not like eastern NC BBQ, or have you found any you like?

I still believe that eastern NC-style BBQ is an acquired taste which I have yet to acquire.

Perfectly understandable.  Though I like eastern NC BBQ, I have my own list of foods I have yet to acquire a taste for.

Follow up -

(1) One of the other "traditions" that seems to have begun with this trip is that I have a habit of leaving my camera bag behind at restaurants. It has happened a few times since, but the first time was at Parker's. I missed the first half of our basketball team's game because I had to drive back out to Parker's to pick up my camera.

(2) I have always credited buffetbuster with coining "Travelin' Manned" as a verb. Is it possible that it was nancypalooza?

(3) Re-reading this thread makes me miss writing trip reports.

TTM-
I saw that and it made me wonder.  Let me go back and find the first time I used it to see.

And I think I speak for many people on here who also miss you doing trip reports.  But, I also realize with your traveling schedule (much more brutal than mine), there just isn't time.

Okay, it looks like the first time (which can be found towards the bottom of this page) I used it was February 15, 2008 after finding Porubsky's Grocery in Topeka closed.  And it looks like she used it a week later.  This made me think I was losing it for a minute.....

I am not usually one to bump my own threads forward, least of all ones this old, but wow....the things that crop up in your Facebook "On This Day" feed. In the comments on this picture, there was a link to this thread, which made me realize that this week is the 10 year anniversary of this trip and of my screen name becoming a verb. Despite the negative overtones of so many places being closed, it really was a great trip, as at the very least, I got to see many friends along the way, including Nathan, who I used to travel with all over for work; Dave, in Charlotte, who has become my best friend (I was best man at his wedding), and as an attorney, suffered through a call as my retained counsel yesterday; Beth, who was the one responsible for me signing an autograph on the above-pictured copy of the book; my first meetings with i95 and signman - and, considering my other 10 year anniversary this year is that I am a 10 year cancer survivor, I remember wanting to take this trip mostly because I was just so happy that I could drive that length of time. I re-read through the entire trip report again, and while I apologize that many of the pictures have gone to the great Internet cloud in the sky, was still amused at the adventures. If it brings you back, I hope you enjoy it, too.

Happy New Year (and Merry Christmas to most of you)!!!

Does that inscription read, "May all your arrest warrants be forever open"?
